When the Wyoming legislature approved legalized online sports betting in 2021, it came as a surprise to many. With no professional sports teams in the state and only a small set of colleges, Wyoming is not well known for its sporting enthusiasm. But many sports fans in the state support teams north of the border in Canada, with ice hockey proving particularly popular.

Nonetheless, online sportsbooks launched in September 2021 and there are now three options for Cowboy State residents. However, as there are no commercial casinos in the state, operators have launched apps and websites only, without the need to partner with land-based casinos.

Three of the big players in the US online betting market have launched in Wyoming so far. DraftKings, Bet MGM, and FanDuel all have online platforms and apps in the state. Each sportsbook is well known for its range of sports betting options and wagers. In addition, the three operators provide welcome bonuses and ongoing promotions for Wyoming bettors.

It remains to be seen if any more providers will enter the Wyoming online betting market. For the time being, state legislators will judge the success of the three current sportsbooks before trying to expand operations. Also, as the state has a fairly reserved approach to gambling, any expansion could prove to be a lengthy process.

Wyoming Sports Betting

Residents of Wyoming have never had any legal sports betting options until now. As there are no commercial casinos, the prospect of launching in-person, retail sportsbooks have been non-existent.

However, under the new laws from 2021, the handful of tribal casinos in the Cowboy State can launch retail sportsbooks if they wish. While none have explored this opportunity yet, some establishments have already expressed interest in launching their own retail sportsbooks.

But, as Wyoming has large areas of uninhabited landmass, there may be little demand for in-person sportsbooks among state residents.

Can I Bet on Horse Betting in Wyoming?

Betting on horse racing is legal in Wyoming and there are currently three tracks that accept live bets in the state. These venues are Wyoming Downs, Sweetwater Downs, and Energy Downs. However, with a small population, there are a limited number of races each year.

Pari-mutuel betting in the state goes further than the live races. Each track and several off-track betting locations offer wagers on simulcast racing. Via simulcast bets, players can wager on live steamed races in the U.S and Canada.

Also, in 2013, the state legalized historical racing machines, where bettors can wager on previous races run. Many off-track betting venues offer historical racing options.

Although pari-mutuel laws have been open to race betting expansion in Wyoming, none of these venues can offer online betting on races.

Alternatively, bettors can legally head to one of the several sites that are licensed out of Oregon. The likes of DRFbets, Xpressbet, and Twinspires have provided online horse race betting services for years.

These providers are well-known within the online horse racing industry for providing in-depth odds and coverage of horse races from the US and from around the world. In addition, Wyoming bettors can sign up and stream hundreds of live races throughout the year.

Wyoming Online Betting Sites: Casinos

At present, there are no Wyoming online betting sites that offer online games for real money. Furthermore, it seems highly unlikely that online casino games will become legal in the Cowboy State due to the lack of commercial, land-based casinos.

The only viable options for online casinos to launch in Wyoming would be through the small number of in-person tribal casinos.

Casino Gambling in Wyoming

Despite the state’s generally conservative approach to gambling in the past, there are some in-person casino betting options in Wyoming. Now, the Northern Arapaho or Eastern Shoshone tribes are the only tribes that operate in-person casino facilities. Although, all of their casinos are located in the remote Wind River Indian Reservation region.

Initially, gaming licenses awarded to tribal groups were for bingo only. But over time as the years, the facilities started adding new products. Firstly, slot machines were added, then table games and video poker were also provided.

Finally, there were a few facilities in the state that offered a full set of casino games for locals and tourists to enjoy. There are also “Historical Racing” Machines available at the racetracks, which actually fall under pari-mutuel rules even though they have a look and feel of a slot machine.

Wyoming Lottery

For many years, Wyoming fell behind other states by not introducing a state lottery. Eventually, this changed in 2013 when the state finally established a Lottery. Like many other state-run lotteries, proceeds go back to social and community programs.

Despite the progress, the state still doesn’t offer the variety of games that other states do. However, there are still some good options through the Wyoming Lottery. State-only games, like the Cowboy Draw and 2by2, are available for residents. Also, players can access the US-wide draw games, like Powerball and Mega Millions.

In addition, there is a lottery app that players can download to mobile devices, the WyoLotto App. However, residents currently cannot buy scratch cards or ticks on the app, but they can scan their tickets to see if they have won.
