In each of the past two seasons, Scottie Scheffler entered the TOUR Championship with an advantage, only to see someone else walk away with the big prize. Will the third time be the charm for the world number one this week at East Lake?
In 2022, Scheffler entered the TOUR Championship with a two-stroke advantage over Patrick Cantlay, and he went into the final round with a six-shot lead over Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele. But he made only one birdie and shot a 3-over 73, while McIlroy shot a 4-under 66 to win his third FedEx Cup title by a stroke over Scheffler and Sungjae Im.
Last year, Scheffler started the TOUR Championship two strokes clear of Viktor Hovland. But while he improved his score by only one stroke over the four rounds, Hovland went 68-64-66-63 on the par-70 course to finish five clear of Schauffele, with Scheffler coming in tied for sixth.
This year, he will open at East Lake two clear of PGA Championship and Open Championship winner Schauffele and three ahead of Hideki Matsuyama, who won the FedEx St. Jude Championship and had a hot start at the BMW Championship before having to withdraw prior to his second round due to back pain.
Starting Strokes for the 2024 TOUR Championship
- -10: Scottie Scheffler
- -8: Xander Schauffele
- -7: Hideki Matsuyama
- -6: Keegan Bradley
- -5: Ludvig Aberg
- -4: Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Sam Burns, Patrick Cantlay
- -3: Sungjae Im, Sahith Theegala, Shane Lowry, Adam Scott, Tony Finau
- -2: Byeong-Hun An, Viktor Hovland, Russell Henley, Akshay Bhatia, Robert MacIntyre
- -1: Billy Horschel, Tommy Fleetwood, Sepp Straka, Matthieu Pavon, Taylor Pendrith
- E: Chris Kirk, Tom Hoge, Aaron Rai, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Justin Thomas
2024 has been an outstanding year for Scheffler. He leads the PGA Tour with six wins, including his second Masters win in three years. And earlier this month, he added Olympic gold medalist to his resume by finishing with a flourish in France.
But missing out on the FedEx Cup title after opening at the top of the leaderboard yet again would no doubt be a big disappointment.
It is anything but a formality, however. In fact, Schauffele is not far adrift at all in the TOUR Championship odds at BetOnline.
