Hosts get off to the perfect start
The hosts won the opening leg of this three-game series as Australia claimed a thrilling 30-28 win. The visitors were battling to break a dreadful losing streak in opening test matches, and although they put up a fight, the Aussies came out on top.
It was a tense opening 40 minutes, with both sides unwilling to use their free-flowing attacks and leave themselves vulnerable to the counter.
After a 6-6 first half, a dramatic second 40 minutes saw the two teams combine for three tries each and 46 combined points. Two of England’s tries came at the very end, however, after Australia had put the result beyond doubt with Pete Samu’s late try, which capped a stretch in which the Wallabies scored three straight converted tries after trailing 14-9 with under 20 minutes remaining.
Australia unable to build off of overdue win
Australia did win their first test match with England in this series, but it was the nation’s only victory in their last five competitive matches.
That streak goes back to the autumn internationals played in the United Kingdom in November when the Aussies suffered demoralising defeats to England, Scotland and Wales inside a fortnight.
That form makes the home team difficult to trust as their defence looks unable to match the great work of the team’s attack, with Australia scoring plenty of points with their eye-catching attacking rugby.
Three Lions roar back into contention
England have endured some painful times down under, but this series appears to be different, with Australia not at their best and England with the quality to take advantage of that.
After losing the first test, England responded by winning the second match in Brisbane, and that game wasn’t anywhere near as competitive as the previous encounter.
The visitors raced into an early lead, winning the first half by 19 points to seven. Things were to get even better for followers of England as the team opened the sail in the second 40 minutes.
In the 25-17 win, England scored just one try, courtesy of Billy Vunipola inside the first five minutes. From there, it was all about Owen Farrell’s boot, as he converted that try and kicked six penalties to rack up a 20-point haul.
Will England cap their turnaround with a series-winning performance in Sydney?
Much has been made of Australia’s recent poor form, but England hasn’t been any better and has suffered some painful defeats in their last five games.
That win over Australia would have helped lift the players’ spirits, but they can’t afford to get carried away with one win in five and must ensure they are at their best if they are to do the double.
It isn’t just the match win at stake here; the winner of this fixture will also claim the series outright by a score of two games to one, and, in such a fierce rivalry, that’s worth its weight in gold to fans.
Both teams can score plenty of points, with Australia and England possessing skill and strength. The boot of Farrell will be vital again for the visitors, and we are expecting another high-scoring match with plenty of talking points, but with England taking the spoils.
