Subscriptions are taking over our lives—Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime, and now DraftKings Premium? With the launch of DraftKings Sportsbook+, the never-ending battle with subscriptions continues.
What is DraftKings Sportsbook+?
To kick off 2025, DraftKings debuted their premium subscription, offering users what they call “stepped-up” boosts for parlays with individual legs of -500 or narrower. Two-leg parlays receive a 10% profit boost, with the percentage increasing for each additional leg. If you are a regular DraftKings user, you are probably familiar with their profit boosts that let you opt in for a chance to have your parlay boosted “up to 100%.” Well, now you have to pay a premium for that privilege.
DraftKings is attempting to entice parlay bettors with promises of bigger payouts, giving the illusion that the average bettor could hit it big and maybe even get rich.
But let’s be real—the book is selling you a fairy tale. Why do you think they post images of winning tickets with payouts north of $20,000 on their social media? To trick unsuspecting bettors into thinking, “If I just hit a 15-leg parlay, I could be rich.” Newsflash: nobody is getting rich off sports betting. If they claim to be, they are lying.
When this subscription was announced, gambling Twitter (or X, as it is now known) erupted in outrage. Brad Evans, host of BetMGM Tonight, summed it up perfectly: “This is quite possibly the dumbest idea in the history of sports betting. Pay us to give you better odds on wagers you’ll inevitably lose a majority of the time. What a concept. If you subscribe, you deserve to be lampooned relentlessly.” He went on to add, “Really, it’s a tragic con designed to take advantage of casual bettors who are already trying to climb Kilimanjaro on a daily basis.”
My initial thoughts:
dumb and should not be legal https://t.co/Vwdgtzctpb

It is disheartening to see casual sports bettors being targeted and exploited in the name of “enhancing the fan experience.” If DraftKings truly wanted to help bettors, why not just offer better odds outright? Instead, they push customers into a never-ending struggle, knowing full well that most will win less than 50% of the time.

Advice for New Sports Bettors
If you are new to sports betting, here is some advice from someone with over six years of experience:
- Educate Yourself. Start by reading Good Teams Win, Great Teams Cover: An Underdog’s Tale of Life, Gambling, and Sharp Betting by Pat Hagerty (find a cheap used copy here). It is a beginner-friendly book that helps improve your approach to betting. No, it will not make you a genius overnight, but it will teach you how to bet smarter.
- Throw Out the Idea of Getting Rich. Sports betting is for fun, not a life-changing financial strategy. Gamble responsibly, never bet more than you can afford to lose, and do not let anyone make you feel ashamed of your unit size. Your bets are your business—nobody else’s.
- Avoid Paid Picks and Subscriptions. Never pay for picks or subscribe to services that tell you where to put your money. Be wary of anyone who is not transparent with their plays. Anyone can post winning slips, but where are the losers? Nobody sustains a 70% win rate over time. Instead, invest in tools, models, and websites that provide advanced data and information to help you make better decisions.
These are my three pillars of sports betting. If you have any questions or need guidance, feel free to reach out.
