One two-time NBA MVP may have been bounced from Eurobasket 2022, but another one is eyeing a spot in the semifinals. In the second of today’s two quarterfinal matchups in Berlin, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Greece will try to eliminate Germany.
Greece has yet to lose in the tournament, and entering the quarterfinals, holds a slight edge over Luka Doncic and Slovenia as the favorite to take the title in Sunday’s final at Mercedes-Benz Arena.
Germany’s lone loss came against Doncic and the reigning Eurobasket champions in the preliminary round, but after being heavily favored against Montenegro in the round of 16, they are the clear underdog in this matchup.

Can Germany Pull Off a Stunner in Berlin?
Germany has done well to reach the quarters for the second straight Eurobasket, having lost to Spain at this stage back in 2017. Upsets of France and Lithuanian in group play helped them finished second behind Slovenia in Group B, setting them up with a favorable round of 16 matchup against Montenegro.
Germany backed up that status with an 85-79 win on Saturday, but they made things far more difficult for themselves than they should have. They led by 27 early in the second half, only for Montenegro to pull within three in the final minute before five free throws sealed the deal.
They will need to be locked in for the full 40 minutes to have a chance against Giannis and Greece, who overcame the Czech Republic’s best efforts for a 94-88 win in their round of 16 matchup on Sunday.
Greece trailed by four to start the fourth quarter, but they outscored the Czechs 31-21 to secure their passage to the last eight.
Without Giannis, Greece wouldn’t be favored to win the tournament. But they have Giannis, and Giannis is doing what Giannis does.
In the win over the Czech Republic, he had 27 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. He has three double-doubles in the tournament and has scored at least 25 points in each game, and in five games, he has averaged 29 PPG, 9.2 RPG, and 4 APG.
Eurobasket 2022 Performances for Giannis Antetokounmpo
- Croatia: 27 points, 11 rebounds, six assists
- Italy: 25 points, 11 rebounds, three assists
- Ukraine: 41 points, nine rebounds, two assists
- Estonia: 25 points, five rebounds, four assists
- Czech Republic: 27 points, 10 rebounds, five assists
He is shooting 56 percent (47 of 84) from the field, but more notably, he has hit on 82.5 (47 of 57) percent of his attempts from the free-throw line.
International basketball is a different animal than the NBA, of course, but as inspired as Germany will be, his presence and performances make it hard to see anything other than a Greece win here.
Giannis is -128 to score over 28.5 points against Germany, and while he has hit that number only once thus far in the tournament, his renowned big-game prowess makes that a good value move.
He and Greece may have work for it just as much as they had to against the Czech Republic. But just as they pulled away in that game, they will do the same in this one even if it takes them until the final quarter to do so.
All but one of Greece’s games has ended up going over 165.5 points, and they are averaging 91.7 points per game in the tournament.
On the other side, four of Germany’s six games have gone over that total, and they are averaging 91.3 points per game (with a 109-107 overtime win in the group stage vs. Lithuania provided a slight boost).
Neither team may hit 90, but both sides will do their part to help the over get over the line.
