Astros vs Phillies Predictions & MLB Picks Today (8/28)
After opening the series with a victory, the Phillies took the 2-0 head-to-head lead with a one-sided 5-0 victory over the Astros on Tuesday.
Philadelphia ace Aaron Nola was phenomenal on the mound, striking out six batters across seven scoreless innings for his 12th win of the campaign. Meanwhile, Nick Castellanos led the offensive charge with a three-run round-tripper in the bottom of the third inning while four Phillies tallied multi-hit efforts.
With the victory, the Phillies have also extended their winning streak to four games. Not only that, but they’ve also improved to 6-1 SU across their last seven home games — a stretch where they boast a plus-3.3 average run margin.
As for the Astros, they’ve dropped to 1-4 SU in their last five road games, which includes being outscored 8-2 on aggregate in this series. Beating the Phillies just isn’t something that happens often for the Astros, who are 1-4 SU in their last five matchups with the former.
Do the Phillies have the Astros’ number? It’s certainly starting to look that way.
Another trend worth noting is that the Astros are 2-5 SU in their last seven inter-league matchups, whereas the Phillies are 5-1 SU in their last six games against an American League team.
Interestingly enough, Philadelphia has been the underdog at Citizens Bank Park only twice this season, going 2-2 SU in those matchups. Conversely, the Astros are just 19-19 SU as the road favorite in 2024 with that 50.0% success rate being tied for the fifth-worst in the Majors.
Astros RHP Spencer Arrighetti makes his 23rd start of the season after pitching six scoreless innings in a 6-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles last week. Having said that, Philadelphia is a dominant 48-34 SU against right-handed pitchers this MLB season.
Speaking of the Phillies, RHP Taijuan Walker is desperately looking to turn things around today. The former All-Star hurler has failed to win each of his last eight starts, going 0-5 with a 7.11 ERA in those matchups. He’s also 0-4 with a 5.82 ERA in his last five meetings with the Astros.
RHP Taijuan Walker hasn’t led the Phillies to a victory since May 22.
Even though the Phillies are up 2-0, I believe the Astros are winning today. As good as the Phillies are, they’re still 0-8 SU in Walker’s last eight starts. The Astros are due to break out of their slump soon, and I see that happening today if they can take advantage of Walker’s recent struggles.
As for today’s best bet, it has the be the Over on the 9.5-run total. Yes, these teams have recently been involved in low-scoring affairs, but today’s pitching matchups make it likely that we’ll see some fireworks. Two of Arrighetti’s last three outings saw at least nine combined runs scored while Walker’s last seven home starts averaged 10.0 total runs.
With talented bats on each side, we should prepare for a lot of offense at Citizens Bank Park tonight.

Best Astros vs Phillies MLB Player Prop (8/28)
I’m going with Jose Altuve o1.5 total bases (-102) for today’s best Astros vs. Phillies prop.
Altuve’s play has dropped since the calendar flipped to August, but he’s still been solid as far as this prop is concerned. The former AL MVP is slashing .286/.362/.524 with 12 hits, three home runs, and a double in his last 11 games (42 at-bats). He also racked up 22 total bases during that stretch (2.0 per outing) while finishing with the Over on this prop six times — including when he tallied two singles less than 24 hours ago. In fact, the Over is 5-2 in his last seven games against the Phillies.
Considering how Altuve is averaging 2.4 TBs when facing left-handed starters this season, the veteran second basemen is in the perfect spot to pull through one more time.
