Will First-Time Winners Sale and Skubal Repeat in 2025?
Last season, Detroit’s Tarik Skubal and Atlanta’s Chris Sale were the class of the league on the mound.
With an 18-4 record, a 2.39 ERA, and 228 strikeouts in 192 innings, Skubal led the majors in wins and strikeouts, and he became the first AL pitching Triple Crown winner since Shane Bieber in 2020 (and the first in a full season since 2011).
In his first season in Atlanta, Sale (18-3, 2.38 ERA, 225 Ks in 177.2 IP) tied Skubal for the league lead in wins, led the majors in ERA, and finished second in strikeouts. In doing so, he became the first National League pitching Triple Crown winner since Clayton Kershaw in 2011.
Skubal swept all 30 first-place votes in AL Cy Young Award voting, becoming the third straight unanimous winner in the AL. Sale, meanwhile, picked up 26 of 30 first-place votes in NL voting, with Philadelphia’s Zack Wheeler receiving the other four.
Will either Sale or Skubal repeat in 2025? Skubal enters the season as the AL favorite, ahead of Garrett Crochet, Logan Gilbert, and Cole Ragans. But there has not been a repeat AL Cy Young winner since 2000, when Pedro Martinez went back-to-back.
Sale is not atop NL Cy Young odds, but recent history is more favorable for him to repeat. Randy Johnson (1999-2002), Tim Lincecum (2008-09), Clayton Kershaw (2013-14), Max Scherzer (2016-17), and Jacob deGrom (2018-19) are all recent repeaters in the NL.
That said, there are a host of capable contenders in both leagues, and even with numerous notable names not available for part (Yu Darvish, Luis Gil, George Kirby, Grayson Rodriguez, Ranger Suarez, and Spencer Strider) or all (Gerrit Cole, Jordan Montgomery, and Gavin Stone) of the 2025 season, it will be tough for either Sale or Skubal to repeat.

AL Cy Young Odds
In the American League, Skubal starts the season as the favorite. Next in line is Crochet, who is expected to have a big season after departing the raging dumpster fire that is the Chicago White Sox for greener pastures in Boston.
Gilbert and Ragans finished sixth and fourth in last year’s Al Cy Young voting and are top contenders entering this season, while last year’s runner-up, Seth Lugo, is much further down the list at +6000 (21st-best odds).
Expectations are high but also tempered for Max Fried, who is now in the AL after signing with the Yankees in the offseason, as well as two-time NL Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom, who has made only 35 starts over the last four seasons but is healthy entering the 2025 campaign.

NL Cy Young Odds
In the National League, Paul Skenes is the clear favorite after an outstanding rookie campaign. While expectations for the Pittsburgh Pirates are low, expectations for Skenes are sky-high, and for good reason after he went 11-3 with a 1.96 ERA in 23 starts on the way to winning NL Rookie of the Year honors.
Behind Skenes are several vaunted veterans including Wheeler and former winners Snell, Burnes (who is back in the National League after a season with the Baltimore Orioles), Sale, and Sandy Alcantara.
Will this finally be Wheeler’s year? After finishing only ten total vote points behind Burnes in 2021, he picked up another second-place finish last year. Cole’s long-awaited Cy Young breakthrough happened in his 11th season; will the same happen for Wheeler this year?
