Dodgers @ Padres Analysis & Breakdown
The Dodgers collapse last night was one for the history books. They got to the Padres EARLY, scoring 5 runs in the top of the 1st inning. Los Angeles then proceeded to score exactly ZERO runs for the rest of the game.
LA went into the bottom of the 9th inning up 5-3, with Blake Treinen out there to close it out. He proceeds to give up two solo home runs, and giving Manny Machado is 2nd of the night. Padres tie it up in the 9th, win on a walk-off single by Solano in the bottom 10th.
An absolute gut punch for the Dodgers and absolute elation for the Padres and their fans at Petco Park. This is what makes baseball beautiful.
Today we’ve got a matchup between two Aces. Dylan Cease is making his first start since recording his first career no-hitter, he’s gone 7+ innings in 3 of his L4; recording 8+ strikeouts in all 4 of these games.
The Dodgers will counter with their own stud, Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw’s making just his second start of the season. He saw 4 innings against the Giants last week, giving up 6 hits and 2 earned runs. He struck out 6 batters and helped his team come out with the win.

Cease is coming off his first career no-hitter and usually this is a spot I would love to fade a pitcher but not today. Cease has been great at home this year, posting a 3.32 ERA at Petco Park and averaging 12.22 strikeouts per 9 innings.
On the road, Cease has still been great, averaging 10.98 strikeouts/9 and posting a 3.66 ERA. He’s played the Dodgers just twice in his career, both games coming while he was still in Chicago.
He recorded 8 strikeouts in the first game, going just 4.2 innings. In the 2nd matchup he went 5.1 innings and recorded 10 strikeouts. Tonight he faces a high powered Dodger offense that has had it’s share of cold streaks this year.
Los Angeles failed to score after the 1st inning yesterday and gave up 6 strikeouts to Padres starter Matt Waldron. The Dodgers struck out 13 times in total last night and strikeout against righties at a 26.7% rate.

It’s a bit strange taking a pitcher to record 9 strikeouts in the exact same game that you’re taking the over in. This line is low enough where I think we can hit this line even with Cease coming out there on fire.
The Padres have won 8 of their L9 games overall and have caught fire at the perfect time. They’ve scored 6 or more runs in 6 of these games and 4 or more in 7 of the 9 games.
San Diego currently sits 2nd in the Wild Card but holds just a half game lead on Mets and Diamondbacks. They also sit just 5.5 games back of the Dodgers for the divisional lead, and with 50+ games still left, anything could happen.
The Padres are 2nd in batting average, as a team, over the L15 days. In that span they played 10 games and recorded an average of 0.287 as a team. Now against Kershaw, some of the Padres have a great history.
Machado is coming off 2 home runs last night and tonight faces off with Kershaw in his first road start of the year. He’s got a career batting average of 0.325 with 4 home runs against Kershaw.
Last season, Kershaw started 24 games and 14 of those came on the road. He posted a 1.58 ERA at Dodger Stadium but saw it balloon to 3.13 when on the road. He gave up 11 home runs on the road and 19 more runs than he did at home.
Kershaw did see 4 more starts on the road, but the numbers still point to terrible outings on the road. Lastly, in his last road start at Petco Park, Kershaw gave up 8 hits, 4 earned runs and 2 home runs in just 4.2 innings of work.
