Los Angeles Dodgers vs Philadelphia Phillies Betting Preview (August 10): First-Place Phillies Welcome Champs in Major Matchup

Monday was one of the quietest days we’ll see this MLB season. There were only five games scheduled, and only four were completed with the Brewers-Cubs matchup being postponed. It wasn’t a completely empty day, but if there was a day to put MLB betting aside and recharge, yesterday was it. I suppose we all needed a little break after running on fumes from all the excitement of the trade deadline and the week that followed.

No team used that week better than the Phillies, who are now in first place in the NL East. That is thanks to an eight-game winning streak, including a sweep of the New York Mets over the weekend.

Tonight they get a stiff test of their mettle against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers can’t seem to catch the Giants at the top of the NL West, and and with all the moves they have made and the money they have spent, they have to be desperate to avoid the winner-take-all Wild Card game.

Their prized acquisition is on the mound tonight, taking on a very familiar foe.

The Dodgers Have Depth But Seem To Lack Energy

Empirically the Dodgers are probably the best and deepest team in the Majors. What they seem to lack is that spark though, that one player who ignites the rest of the group. Acquiring starting pitcher Max Scherzer can help as he is super intense, but he only pitches every fifth day. Is it possible they have too much depth for someone to step forward?

With the addition of All-Star infielder Trea Turner, there are now eight Dodgers who have hit 14+ homers for the season. This team can beat you by just going up there and taking their hacks. Turner adds a speed element too, so if he can get hot at the top of that lineup, that will make the Dodgers all the more dangerous.

Phillies Looking to Extend Best Run of the Season

A few weeks back, I suggested it was time to put a futures bet on the Phillies to take the NL East. The Mets were leaking oil for a while, and Philly seemed primed to finally put together a run. It might be a bumpy ride for the Phillies moving forward, but it is hard not to like their chances. 2015 NL MVP Bryce Harper is making a charge to add to his trophy cabinet, and Zack Wheeler is the new NL Cy Young favorite.

The Phillies’ greatest weakness is a bullpen that has struggles all season. Unfortunately that means their opponents are never out of a game. Perhaps Archie Bradley will be inspired by seeing the Dodgers out there. He is not alone, but he is an arm that they need more from down the stretch.

This is a prime pitching matchup. Scherzer is very familiar with the Phillies, having beaten them twice already this season while pitching with the Washington Nationals. I am not sure what is up with Nola this season. His road splits have gotten away from him, but pitching at home should hopefully bring out his best tonight.

This one is being priced as if this was the same Phillies team from two weeks ago. They are playing their best ball of the season, and they are at home with one of their best pitchers on the mound.
