Will Ohtani Make More History in 2025?
Since the Baseball Writers’ Association of America began awarding MLB Most Valuable Player honors in 1931, a dozen players have been named MVP three or times.
Last year, Shohei Ohtani joined the likes of Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, and Mike Trout as three-time winners.
After winning his second AL MVP in 2023 then signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers that offseason, Ohtani hit .310 with 54 homers, 130 RBI, 134 runs, and 59 steals in 2024. He joined Frank Robinson as the only players to win MVP honors in both the American League and National League and became the first player to do it in consecutive seasons.
To date, only Barry Bonds, a seven-time winner, is the only player with four or more MLB MVP wins. This year, Ohtani could enter that exclusive club, and with him back on the mound after not pitching at all in 2024, his chances are high.
Aaron Judge, meanwhile, is aiming to become the 13th member of the three-time winner club. Last season, Judge earned AL MVP plaudits for the second time in three seasons after bouncing back from an injury-ravaged 2023 by hitting .322 with 58 homers, 144 RBI, and 122 runs.
Judge and Ohtani are not the only players who could make MLB MVP history in 2025.
Three-time AL MVP Mike Trout, who has missed 392 games over the last four seasons, is looking for a healthy 2025 and a run at joining Bonds and potentially Ohtani as four-time winners.
Also, two-time NL MVP Bryce Harper is looking to become a three-time winner, and 2018 AL MVP Mookie Betts, who has twice been NL MVP runner-up (2020 and 2023), will try to join Ohtani as a winner in both leagues.

AL MVP Odds
Will Judge rise above all other AL contenders again this season? Or will it be a crowning year for Bobby Witt Jr.?
Last year, in his third MLB season, the 24-year old won the AL batting title and finished second in AL MVP voting behind Judge as he hit .332 with 45 doubles, 11 triples, 32 homers, 109 RBI, 125 runs, and 31 steals.
Henderson slots in behind Judge and Witt, and his candidacy should be affected by having to start the season on the injured list due to an intercostal strain.
Last season, Henderson was fourth behind Judge, Witt, and Juan Soto in AL MVP voting after hitting .281 with 37 homers, 92 RBI, 118 runs, and 21 steals.

NL MVP Odds
Ohtani is easily the favorite, especially with his resumption of pitching duties adding another layer to his candidacy.
Can Soto challenge him in his return to the NL East? Soto and the Mets have high expectations after he spurned the Yankees to instead sign a mega-deal with New York’s other team, and the former Washington Nationals star is back amongst familiar faces in the NL East. In his lone season with the Bronx Bombers, he hit .288 with 41 homers, 109 RBI, and 128 runs.
Tatis is once again an MVP favorite, but will he be able to at least match his career-best finish (third in 2021)? To date, that is the high point of his career individually. Last season, he hit .276 with 21 homers, 49 RBI, 64 runs, and 11 steals in 102 games.
