Orioles vs Mets Predictions & MLB Picks Today (8/21)
After losing the series opener, the Orioles battled back with a 9-5 victory over the Mets on Tuesday. Baltimore RHP Dean Kremer struck out seven batters for his sixth win of the season while RF Anthony Santander led the offensive charge with his 37th home run in 2024.
It will be interesting to see if yesterday’s victory was the beginning of more positives to come for Baltimore. After all, the Orioles are only 9-9 SU during August and have only won consecutive outings once in the last 10 days. It doesn’t help that they’re also an abysmal 7-9 SU across their last nine road games.
On the other hand, it isn’t like the Mets are playing their best brand of baseball at the moment. New York has dropped seven of its last 11 outings and a big preseason behind that lack of success is the team averaging just 3.8 runs per game during that stretch. That’s just not going to cut it against the O’s, who put up the third-most runs in the Majors per game.
Having said that, Citi Field hasn’t been a welcoming environment for the visitors. The Orioles had lost four consecutive trips to Queens before last night’s winning, leaving time to tell if it was a fluke or not.
Will the Orioles experience more rare success in Queens?
All eyes will be on Orioles LHP Cole Irvin, who’s making his first start since June 30. The former 2016 fifth-rounder was moved to the bullpen in July and played to extremely poor results, tallying a 9.00 ERA as he allowed 14 earned runs and four homers on 21 hits across just 14 innings.
Additionally, Irvin is 2-2 with a 5.14 ERA in seven inter-league appearances (3 starts) this season.
As for the Mets, RHP Sean Manaea’s recent performances have been mixed at best. On one hand, he allowed six runs over 10 innings in his last two starts — good for a 5.40 ERA. On the other hand, the Valparaiso, IN native is 5-0 with a 2.03 ERA in his last five home games, illustrating just how much of a boost he gets from the Citi Field crowd.
Can the Mets take advantage of Orioles LHP Cole Irvin’s struggles?
In a game that could go in either direction, I predict we’ll see a Mets victory today. Again, the Orioles have struggled to string together consecutive wins in recent weeks and Irvin’s play on the mound can’t be trusted. The Mets’ batters are talented enough to take advantage of the situation and another strong showing from Manaea will only seal the deal.
With that in mind, backing the Over on the 8-run total is the way to go. The Over is 12-6 in the Mets’ last 18 home games as well as 15-5 in the Orioles’ 20 previous road outings. Furthermore, Baltimore and New York have surpassed their projected total in 11 of the last 14 meetings, averaging a combined 11.5 runs per game.
After the two sides combined for 14 runs on Tuesday, we’ll likely see plenty of offense this afternoon.

Best Orioles vs Mets MLB Player Prop (8/21)
As he’s set to make his return to the starting rotation, I’m taking the Over on Cole Irvin’s 2.5 earned runs (-127) as today’s best Orioles vs. Mets player prop.
The Over on this prop is a promising 7-2 in Irvin’s last nine appearances. The 30-year-old veteran hurler pitched to a putrid 8.72 ERA during that stretch and has allowed 15 earned runs across 9 2/3 innings in his last three road starts. He now gets to go up against the Mets, who rank as follows when it comes to facing left-handed pitchers this season:
- Hits: 14th
- Doubles: T-2nd
- Home runs: T-7th
- RBIs: 8th
- Batting average: 9th
- On-base %: 8th
- Slugging %: 3rd
In other words, Irvin likely has a long day ahead of him. Based on his recent struggles and the fact that he hasn’t started a game in over a month, it’s easy to like the Over today.
Best Orioles vs. Mets MLB Prop Bet: Cole Irvin o2.5 Earned Runs (-127)
