After taking the past couple of weeks off with the Olympics in the spotlight, the NASCAR Cup Series is back today. And we’ve got some evening action at Richmond Raceway for the Cook Out 400 (6:00 pm ET, USA Network).
There are four races remaining in the regular season, and race #23 sees the Cup Series regular season championship chase resume with Kyle Larson ten points clear of Hendrick Motorsports teammate Chase Elliott, with Tyler Reddick only 15 points behind.
2024 NASCAR Cup Series Standings (Through 22 of 26 Regular Season Races)
- Kyle Larson – 749
- Chase Elliott – 739
- Tyler Reddick – 734
- Denny Hamlin – 706
- Ryan Blaney – 676
- William Byron – 654
- Martin Truex Jr. – 653
- Christopher Bell – 651
- Brad Keselowski – 615
- Alex Bowman – 606
Is it a three-horse race for the regular season title? Hamlin isn’t to be counted out just yet, and he will have a chance to help his hopes at Richmond, as he starts on the Cook Out 400 pole. He won the spring race at Richmond, the Toyota Owners 400, while Truex led 228 of the 407 laps but finished fourth.
Hamlin and Truex, who is still searching for his first win of the season, will occupy the front row. Truex will be in the playoffs even if he can’t make his way to Victory Lane at Richmond, Michigan, Daytona, or Darlington. But with him in the top ten are three drivers who don’t have that cushion.
Chris Buescher, who won last year’s Cook Out 400, is 12th in the points, but with his spot is not secure with Joey Logano (15th), Daniel Suarez (17th), and Austin Cindric (19th) all with wins this season and Ross Chastain not far behind him in the points. Buescher will start seventh, while Austin Dillon (32nd) will start sixth, and Josh Berry (22nd) will start third.

Cook Out 400 Predictions & Picks
- Chase Elliott to finish in the top five (+240 at Bovada): Elliott finished fifth at Richmond in March, and while he has never won a Cup Series race there, he has finished in the top five six times. A seventh is in the cards today.
- Austin Dillon to finish in the top ten (+155 at Bovada): This is only the third time this season that Dillon, who has just two top ten finishes in 22 races, has qualified in the top ten. I’m going to ride with his speed to translate into a strong showing today.
- Tyler Reddick to finish in the top ten (-125 at Bovada): That this is available at this number is wild. Reddick is in scorching form with five straight top-six finishes and eight top-eight finishes in his last nine races, and he will start tenth today.
- Chris Buescher to win: After winning three races, Buescher has yet to win this season, which has him in a shaky spot heading down the home stretch of the regular season. Look for him to change that tonight and become the first driver since Denny Hamlin (2009 & 2010) to win this race in consecutive years.
