Next weekend, the NASCAR Cup Series will be engaging in some All-Star action at North Wilkesboro Speedway. No points will be up for grabs then, but plenty of points and a valuable victory will be up for grabs this afternoon in the Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway.
Today’s race, the 13th of the 2024 Cup Series season, is the start of a three-week stretch in the Carolinas. After leaving South Carolina, the series will head to North Carolina for All-Star festivities next weekend then the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway the following weekend.
The winner of the Goodyear 400 will lock up an automatic spot in the All-Star Race if they have not already done so. Entering today’s race, 17 drivers have secured a spot, including 2023 Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney, 2024 series wins leaders William Byron and Denny Hamlin, and Kyle Larson, the current series points leader.
Larson took the checkered flag at last week’s AdventHealth 400 at Kansas Speedway, his second win of the season. Larson currently holds a 29-point lead over Martin Truex Jr., with Hendrick Motorsports teammate Chase Elliott in third, 55 points back.

Goodyear 400 Predictions and Picks
In last year’s Goodyear 400, William Byron picked up one of his six 2023 wins, with the now-retired Kevin Harvick finishing second and Elliott third.
After finishing 33rd at Dover and 23rd at Kansas, Byron could use a good result today. He has finished in the top five in four of his last seven races at Darlington, and at +125 (at Bovada) for a top-five finish today, there’s good value in backing him to make it five in eight.
Recent Goodyear 400 Winners
- 2023: William Byron
- 2022: Joey Logano
- 2021: Martin Truex Jr.
- 2020 (Race #2): Denny Hamlin
- 2020 (Race #1): Kevin Harvick
His teammate Elliott is arguably the hottest driver in the series right now with a win and four other top-five finishes in his last six races.
Since spring racing returned to Darlington in 2020, Elliott has finished fourth, 38th, seventh, fifth, and third. Given how well he is doing at present and his recent results at Darlington, +240 (at Bovada) for a top-five finish is well worth the investment even though he will start 31st in the Goodyear 400.
The last finishing position pick for today’s race is a 23XI driver, but it isn’t Reddick. Wallace finished fifth in last year’s Goodyear 400, and despite a strong qualifying run, he is only +165 at BetOnline to finish in the top ten.
Since opening the season with back-to-back top-five finishes at Daytona and Atlanta, Wallace has finished in the top ten only twice in ten races (fourth at Martinsville and seventh at Texas Motor Speedway). But that value can’t be passed up, especially with him starting in a prominent position in the field.
But who is the best bet to cross the finish line first at Darlington? Of the top dozen race winner favorites, 11 are starting in the front six rows.
There have been only five instances of a driver winning this race in consecutive years, the most recent being Dale Jarrett in 1997 and 1998. But after a couple of disappointing results at Dover and Kansas, Byron is a good bet to bag his second straight Goodyear 400 win and his series-leading fourth victory of the season.
