Yesterday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Martinsville Speedway featured some late drama, as Austin Hill won the Marine Corps 250 in overtime. Similar drama could unfold today at “The Paperclip” in the Cup Series Cook Out 400 (3:00 pm ET, FS1).

Can Hendrick Motorsports Make It Four Straight at Martinsville?
Since the spring Cup race at Martinsville went from 500 laps to 400 in 2022, two of three races have finished in overtime. Last year’s Cook Out 400 went 15 laps beyond the scheduled 400 as William Byron captured his second Martinsville spring race win.
Hendrick Motorsports has owned the race since it moved to 400 laps, with Byron winning in 2022 and 2024 and Kyle Larson taking the checkered flag in 2023.
Will that dominance continue today? Three HMS drivers will start in the front two rows. Chase Elliott posted his best qualifying result of the season and will start up front with polesitter Christopher Bell, while Alex Bowman and Kyle Larson will occupy the second row. Byron, the series leader in points, will start tenth.
While Bell, who leads the series with three wins, is on pole and all four Hendrick cars are top contenders, none sit atop the Cook Out 400 winner odds. That would be Ryan Blaney, who has back-to-back wins in the Xfinity 500, the fall race at Martinsville. Blaney is coming off of three consecutive poor finishes, so a win—or even finishing the race, which he didn’t do in the Pennzoil 400 or Straight Talk Wireless 400—would certainly be welcome for the 2023 Cup Series champion.

Cook Out 400 Predictions & Picks
Alex Bowman (-115 at Bovada) head-to-head vs Chase Briscoe
Bowman came up short of the win at Homestead, finishing second behind his teammate. But he continued his fine start to the season, picking up his first top-five finish and finishing in the top ten for the fifth time in six races.
Expect another strong result today for Bowman, who won the fall race at Martinsville in 2021. That strong result will include finishing better than Briscoe, who has not finished better than Bowman in the last four races.
Cook Out 400 Group Betting: Chris Buescher to win Group 3 (+310 at BetOnline)
This group also includes Brad Keselowski (+230), Ty Gibbs (+245), and Ross Chastain (+245). Buescher brings up the rear despite having the best starting position of the quartet and being in the best form of the bunch as well. He comes into the Cook Out 400 with four top-ten finishes this season, which is two more than the other three combined. Take advantage of a great value opportunity here, without hesitation.
William Byron to finish in the top five (+150 at Bovada)
After finishing 12th last week, look for a much better result from Byron, who is on track for a fourth top-five finish of the season if he continues the pattern that he has been on to start this season (1st-27th-2nd-6th-4th-12th). At these odds, this is a take every time if you are a regular Byron bettor, especially when it’s a track at which he has experienced success.
Chase Elliott to win the Cook Out 400
That Elliott qualified well bodes well for his chances of winning at Martinsville for the first time since the fall race in 2020. The only other time this season that he started in the first two rows, he finished fourth at Circuit of the Americas after qualifying third.
That is his lone top-five finish of the season to date, but he should add to that today, even if he doesn’t end up in Victory Lane. Historically, good qualifying runs have often led to good race finishes for Elliott, and that makes him a great option to manufacture some Martinsville magic today.
