The 76ers were well on their way to evening up the series at home on Sunday, as they held a ten-point lead in the third quarter.

But thanks to Brunson’s 47 points and 10 assists and outstanding defense in the final six minutes, the Knicks pulled out a 97-92 win to take a commanding 3-1 series lead.

Now, the Knicks have the opportunity to close out the series at home, where they won the first two games.

So far, three teams, all of them in the Western Conference, have wrapped up a spot in the conference semifinals.

What have we seen from the teams who were on the brink? Teams are 0 for 3 in trying to stave off elimination, but all three led at some point in the fourth quarter.

The outlook may not be an optimistic one for the 76ers, but like the Los Angeles Lakers did in their five-game series loss to the Denver Nuggets, they have led in the fourth quarter in every game of the series.

There’s nothing to take positively from scoring five points in the final six minutes and Embiid faltering in the fourth. But based on what Philadelphia has done even in defeat, they won’t feel out of it even if winning the series will require two victories at MSG.

When they have had Embiid on the floor, the 76ers have lost consecutive games only three times this season. It occurred on November 14 (to the Pacers at home) and 15 (to the Celtics at home), January 25 (to the Pacers on the road) and January 30 (to the Warriors on the road), and the first two games of this series.

This has been one of the most competitive series of the first round. Game 3 is the only one to be decided by double digits, and the Sixers needed to outscore the Knicks by 16 in the third quarter to take control in that game.

Expect that competitiveness to continue tonight and for the Sixers to leave it all on the floor, even if they aren’t able to send the series back to Philadelphia for a Game 6 on Thursday.

Embiid hasn’t scored fewer than 30 points all that often that season, but when he has, he has usually responded with a 30-point game the next time out.

Sunday’s game was only the 11^th time (in 44 games this season) Embiid failed to reach the 30-point mark. In the first ten instances (including his return from two-plus months out), he went for 34, 26, 48, 33, 32, 24, 29, 30, 29, and 34 the next time out.

In Game 4, Maxey totaled fewer than 36 combined points + rebounds + assists for the first time in the series, recording 23 points (8 of 21 FG, 3 of 9 3PT, 4 of 4 FT), six rebounds, and six assists. Look for him to be more productive tonight.

Oubre was Philadelphia’s third leading scorer in Games 3 and 4. In Game 3, he had 15 points (6 of 8 FG, 2 of 4 3PT, 1 of 2 FT), and in Game 4, he had 19 points (7 of 15, 3 of 7 3PT, 2 of 2 FT).

He didn’t do much in the first two games, but he has overall been at his best on the road. In the regular season, he averaged 16.0 PPG (46.4% FG, 33.3% 3PT) on the road and 14.8 PPG (41.7% FG, 28.8% 3PT) at home.
