Celtics vs Nuggets NBA Predictions & Picks (1/7)

No one would be surprised if these teams were the last two standing in June. After all, the Celtics are heading into tonight’s action as BetOnline’s +225 favorite to win the 2024-25 NBA Finals while the Nuggets currently rank fifth at +1400 odds.

This evening’s affair will mark the finale of the Celtics’ four-game road trip after going 2-1 SU in the first two outings. After opening their voyage with back-to-back wins, though, the C’s were brought back to earth with Sunday’s 105-92 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Although Boston is still one of the NBA’s best teams, a 7-6 SU record in its last 13 games has made for an underwhelming run.

Meanwhile, the Nuggets have finally hit their stride following an up-and-down start to the campaign. Michael Malone’s team has four victories in its last five contests, most recently notching a 121-111 overtime win over the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday, led by Nikola Jokic’s massive 46-point performance.

The Celtics have one of the league’s top defenses, but it remains to be seen if they can slow down the Nuggets. While it’s a small sample size, Denver is averaging 127.4 PPG on .496/.371/.835 splits in their last five games, outscoring those opponents by an average of 10.2 PPG.

Will the Celtics be able to halt the Nuggets’ red-hot offensive play? 

One thing that could hurt the Nuggets is that they’ll be shorthanded tonight. Spencer Jones (thigh), Vlatko Cancar (knee), and Aaron Gordon (calf) have all been ruled out for the upcoming affair, whereas the Celtics don’t have a single name on their injury report.

Another obstacle in the Nuggets’ way is that the Celtics love playing on the road. Since the start of the 2022-23 season, Boston’s 70.6% win percentage (72-30 SU) as the road favorite ranks sixth-best in the NBA. The Nuggets have only been home underdogs seven times during that stretch, winning six of those contests. Still, the inexperience of having to deal with the odds being against them at Ball Arena could come back to bite the hosts.

The Celtics’ perimeter shooting could also cause headaches for the Nuggets. Boston is averaging a league-best 18.4 threes made on 36.7% shooting (14th), and continuing that success will likely frustrate a Denver team that is tied for allowing the ninth-most three-pointers this season.

That’s without mentioning how the Celtics are also 6-3 SU in their last nine encounters with Nikola Jokic & Co.

How will the Celtics handle their latest visit to Ball Arena? 

Taking the above into account, the Celtics have what it takes to win in Denver tonight.

Although the Nuggets have been performing well, the Celtics are, well, the Celtics. Joe Mazzulla’s team is good enough to beat any opponent in any location and winning at Ball Arena shouldn’t be an issue. Along with boasting the healthier roster, Boston is the best three-point shooting squad in the NBA and should be able to take advantage of the Nuggets’ inconsistent perimeter defense.

Regardless of who wins, though, I’m taking the Under on the 236-point total. After all, the last 10 games between these foes averaged just 213.5 PPG, finishing with the Under on this prop in all but one of those contests. That includes when they combined for only 224 points in their last meeting at Ball Arena on March 7, 2024.

With the Under also being 6-1 in the Celtics’ last seven road games, NBA bettors shouldn’t expect a ton of offense tonight.
