Joel Embiid didn’t play enough games in the regular season to be able to repeat as NBA MVP, but he played like one when the Philadelphia 76ers needed him to in Game 3 against the New York Knicks on Thursday, putting up 50 points in a pivotal win.

Unfortunately, he also generated significant controversy by appearing to intentionally attempt to injure Knicks center Mitchell Robinson.

As a result, a tense Game 4 could be in store this afternoon (1:00 pm ET, ABC). As it is, it is a huge game. The seventh-seeded 76ers will be aiming to knot the series up after losing the first two games in New York, while the Knicks while be looking to set up the opportunity to clinch the series at home on Tuesday (time and TV TBD). But with the added controversy, we could be in for a chippy contest at Wells Fargo Center.

After losing the first two games at Madison Square Garden, the 76ers needed to win Game 3 to realistically remain in the series.

They did just that, and a second straight win is likely in the cards today.

The Knicks have a rather robust record in games after a loss, going 22-10 SU (68.8%, 4^th in the NBA) and 20-11-1 ATS (64.5%, 2^nd in the NBA).

But Philadelphia’s Game 3 win was the latest example of just how good they are and can be when Embiid is available and at his best. He was 13 of 19 from the field, including 5 of 7 from three, and hit 19 of 21 free throws while also hauling in eight rebounds and dishing out four assists.

Following their 125-114 win on Thursday, the 76ers have now won 33 of 43 games in which Embiid has played this season, including 21 of 26 home games.

As good as the Knicks have been in bouncing back from losses, that is a formidable record to contend with.

So is the Sixers’ record as a home favorite with Embiid on the floor. For the season, Philadelphia is 25-9 SU and 22-12 ATS as a home favorite, which is not bad at all. But with Embiid, they are 20-4 SU and 18-6 ATS, including 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS since he returned to action at the start of this month.
