Mavericks vs Thunder NBA Cup Predictions & Picks (12/10)

As the NBA Cup Quarterfinals are underway, only one of these red-hot Western Conference teams will advance to the next round of action.

The Mavericks head into the knock-out stage as one of the NBA’s hottest teams, having won seven straight outings. Their most recent win came in the form of a 125-118 effort over the Toronto Raptors as Luka Doncic dominated with another triple-double (30 points, 13 rebounds, 11 assists) performance.

The Mavericks’ success extends further than their current win streak, proven by their 11-1 SU record in their last 12 outings. Consistent defensive efforts have played a big role in that run as Dallas has held its last dozen opponents to 111.6 PPG (11th) on a 44.3 FG% (5th) and 34.4 3P% (7th).

Having said that, the Thunder’s defense has been just as good, if not better than, the Mavericks’ performance during that stretch. After all, Oklahoma City ranks first in points against, second in field-goal percentage allowed, and third in three-point percentage surrendered in the last 12 games — a span where Mark Daigneault’s team is also 9-3 SU.

Both the Thunder and Mavericks have seen a lot of defensive in recent weeks.

Tonight’s meeting is also the second Mavericks vs. Thunder clash of the 2024-25 NBA season. The two foes collided at Paycom Center back on Nov. 17 as the Mavericks notched a 121-119 victory over the Thunder — improving to 5-1 SU in the last six games of the head-to-head series.

Even though Shai Gilgeous-Alexander dropped a game-high 36 points, it wasn’t enough as P.J. Washington amassed 27 points and 17 rebounds to help the Doncic-less Mavericks pick up the road win. Speaking of which, the Slovenian superstar has been thriving since returning from injury, averaging 31.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 9.5 assists in the last four games.

Even though Doncic is healthy, the Mavericks will be shorthanded as Jaden Hardy (ankle), Maxi Kleber (illness), and Naji Marshall (illness) have been ruled out. Washington (illness) is questionable and could end up being a game-time decision.

On the flip side, the Thunder will be without the following:

• Alex Ducas (hip)
• Jaylin Williams (hamstring)
• Ousmane Dieng (finger)
• Chet Holmgren (hip)

Needless to say, Gilgeous-Alexander & Co. must step up to avoid elimination.

Can Shai Gilgeous-Alexander carry the Thunder to victory tonight? 

It’s going to be a close game tonight, and I’m going with a Mavericks victory at Paycom Center. As good as the Thunder are, I can’t ignore the Mavs’ win streak as well as their recent success over the former. There’s also the fact that Doncic is back in prime form, which gives Dallas a shot at beating anytime in enemy territory.

You’ll also want to look at taking the Mavericks to cover the spread. After all, they’re 6-1 ATS in their last seven games as well as 7-0 ATS across their last seven Western Conference showdowns. The Thunder may have covered the spread in four of their last five outings, but they’re only 2-4 ATS in their last six home games vs. the Mavs.

Even if they don’t win, the Mavericks have what it takes to keep things close and cover.
