By its very nature, the #4 vs. #5 NBA playoff series between the Philadelphia 76ers and Toronto Raptors should be pretty close with perhaps the extra home game for the better seed being the ultimate difference.

Throw in a #5 seed that had a 3-1 SU/4-0 ATS record against the #4 seed during the regular season, and you have all the makings of a seven-game marathon. Or so you would think.

Alas, Toronto is down 3-0 heading into Saturday’s game against Philadelphia. The scrappy Raptors just might be the first team eliminated from these playoffs.

It Is All About Embiid

He is not my top candidate for NBA MVP this season, but it is hard to ignore the impact that Joel Embiid has had on this series. And that was before he hit the game-winning three pointer in overtime on Wednesday night.

Embiid has scored 30+ points in each of the last two games and has at least 11 rebounds in each contest.

Second year guard Tyrese Maxey has been one of the breakout stars of these playoffs, but it is the attention that Embiid commands that has been critical to the success of the team.

During the regular season, Toronto did a great job limiting Embiid’s efficiency, but their lack of size has really shown over the first three games of the series.

How they do against him in game four will determine whether they can extend the series.

Can the Raptors’ Stars Keep Them in the Series?

Toronto has a different roster-building approach than a lot of other teams. It is not that they don’t want elite players. Every NBA team does.

But the Raptors are so good at developing players, and making them better, that they have not overreached to bring in star players. Yes, they traded for Kawhi Leonard, but it was hardly an overpay to get one of the NBA’s biggest stars, even for just one season.

But in this series, they seem to be suffering from a lack of star power as All-Star guard Fred VanVleet and versatile forward Pascal Siakam have not been able to elevate their games.

In that vacuum, forward OG Anunoby has been Toronto’s top scorer. As much as he continued to expand his game, they need everyone firing on all cylinders if they are going to compete. That is the way they are built.

Not to be overlooked is the fact that rookie Scottie Barnes got hurt in game one of the series and has not played since. That has not made things any easier for the Raptors.

Heading into the series I thought it would go at least six games one way or the other. I really liked the matchup and the way that the Raptors had success limiting Embiid, and James Harden once he joined the 76ers.

The Sixers are a team that could definitely benefit from a short series so they can rest their two stars. But at the same time, this group has not shown much killer instinct in the past.

They are a front-running team, and it would not surprise me if they were a little soft with their approach in this game knowing they have four games to get one win. Especially if they get down early.

Toronto generally plays with toughness, so I am expecting a strong outing in Game 4, especially at home.

If they can get one win and push the series back to Philadelphia and get Barnes healthy maybe this thing turns. They were so close in game three, so they don’t have to do much different on Saturday.

Look for a game similar to game three, just with the Raptors making a couple of key plays down the stretch to get the close win.

Fred VanVleet OVER 18.5 Points (-113 at BetUS)

VanVleet made the All-Star team this season and averaged 20.3 PPG. Through three games he has scored 18, 20, and 12 points, but it has not been because Philly is defending him all that well. He is just missing shots he normally makes.

That creates a buying opportunity in this game. He is the engine for Toronto and able to score multiple ways and when it comes down to it, if the Raptors are going to win or lose he is one of the guys you want taking the shots. His volume will be there for sure.

I also like the fact that the Raptors have had a little extra rest for this game and unless one team is winning by 20 points, he is going to play maximum minutes to make sure Toronto extends the season (or tries to catch up).

VanVleet is never a selfish player but he has a great sense of the moment. You can take him on points, assist, and rebounds too. His assists and rebounds have gone up with every game.
