Spurs @ Mavericks Analysis & Breakdown
The Mavs have retooled and readied themselves for what’s, hopefully, another deep playoff run. The Spurs on the other hand, drafted some great young talent, added Chris Paul, and enter this year with Wembanyama entering Year 2. It’s a good time to be a fan of either one of these squads, and it’s a great team to be a fan of any member of the Southwest Division.
Luka Doncic and the Mavericks are fresh off a loss in the NBA Finals but now that this team’s gotten a taste of what that feels like, they won’t settle for anything. We know Luka Doncic is a winner, and we know that Kyrie Irving’s done his fare share of winning; now add in a 4-time champ in Klay Thompson and they Mavericks could be cooking.
New Faces
It’s not just the addition of Klay that has me high on the Mavericks this year, it’s the other two guys no one’s talking about; Quentin Grimes and Naji Marshall. Grimes is a career 37% from beyond the arc and Naji Marshall is coming off a season in which he shot 38.7% from 3.
Last year the lack of perimeter shooters on the Mavericks was evident. The playmaking and penetration skills both Kyrie and Luka possess goes wasted if you haven’t surrounded them with shooters. So what did the Mavericks do? Bring in the shooters.
The Spurs enter this year with Victor Wembanyama ready for a full season of NBA action and a full compliment of NBA minutes. They added young pieces in the draft such as Stephon Castle, and brought in veteran point guard Chris Paul through free agency.
The CP3 move, to me, looks more like a move towards development of their young guard rotation and the development of Wembanyama. Every team Chris Paul has gone to has gotten significantly better in the W/L department, and it’s not by accident.

The Mavericks didn’t bring these shooters in to sit on the bench, I don’t expect Grimes to see over 20 minutes tonight but with Luka’s play style and his ability to drive and kick, I love Grimes in this spot.
Grimes struggles in the pre-season, shooting under 30% from beyond the arc and playing in just 20 minutes per game. Luka missed all of the teams pre-season games and Kyrie played in just 2 games.
Shooters Shoot
Dallas watched both Tim Hardaway Jr. and Josh Green leave via free agency and begin the season without Dante Exum. Grimes has spoken about how the Maverick coaches have given him “the ultimate green light” in his own words.
They want the young guard to shoot the ball and they want him to shoot often. Both Grimes and the team were in talks about a rookie-scale extension but talks have since stalled as the season begins. Grimes has a chance to prove his worth to this organization and hopefully show them that he’s someone they’ll want around for a while.
It all starts tonight, Game 1 of 82.

Victor Wembanyama o24.5 Points (-104) via BetOnline – Get a $500 WELCOME BONUS
It’s Year 2 for Victor and it’s time to put the league on notice. He blew our expectations out of the water last year and he enters his sophomore year with even more swagger.
Wemby averaged 19.7 points per game last year but he was playing under 30 minutes per game and only taking 16.7 shots per game. After the All-Star Break is when we saw Wemby assume a little more control of this Spurs team.
He averaged 23.5 points per game and took 18 shots per game. Victor saw a 31.2% usage rate last year and that number’s only going to increase this year. The Spurs are starting the year without their 2nd best scorer, Devin Vassell and start the season on the road, against a divisional opponent.
These are the big moments that star players come to play. Wemby’s already a star, but look for him to make that Superstar leap here in just his 2nd season.
