The 4th ranked Youngstown State Penguins take on the top ranked Robert Morris Colonials. These teams already played twice this season, so let’s chat about how we got here.

Youngstown State took down #5 Fort Wayne and then #2 Cleveland State en route to the title. Robert Morris demolished #8 Wright State and then beat #6 Oakland in overtime last night. The Penguins have certainly had the tougher path, but will that matter in the championship?

Both teams also split the season series, so tonight is anyone’s game. Who will win this matchup, claim the Horizon League Championship, and punch their ticket to March Madness?

A Third Matchup Between These Teams

Like I said, this is the third meeting between these teams. They’ve split the season series, but let’s discuss how those games went. The first meeting was back on December 4th at Robert Morris. The Colonials were 1.5 point favorites, but ended up losing outright by 14, with the total staying under 138, 72-58. Then, on January 22nd in Youngstown, the Colonials got their revenge as 3 point underdogs, winning 72-70 as the total again stayed under 146.

Now Bobby Mo is laying 3.5 on a neutral site in the conference championship. We have the lowest total set between these teams, and even though I think it stays under, I like Robert Morris to cover. The Colonials are coming off an overtime game against Oakland, but I think they might have been counting their chickens early and looking ahead to a championship game. They squeaked out a win, but failed to cover. However I think they are simply the better team.

The Penguins had to battle both Fort Wayne and Cleveland State, winning by a combined 7 points. If this game comes down to the few final possessions, I certainly lean with RMU.

The Colonials are on a nine game winning streak, and have also won 14 of their last 15 games. They are 18-3 since December 17th, they are Top 45 nationally in crashing the offensive glass and getting to the free throw line, and Top 75 in forcing turnovers. This is the 2nd best defense in the conference, 1st in eFG% defense, and they aren’t afraid to push the pace.

Bobby Mo out offensive rebounded the Penguins in both games, 12-9 at home, and 19-7 on the road. They also shot more free throws in both contests, 22-13 at home and 17-9 on the road. When you grab more offensive rebounds and get more free throw attempts, your chances of outscoring your opponent go up tremendously.

The Penguins will also push this pace, but they struggle to offensive rebound themselves and aren’t too keen at getting to the line or keeping their opponents off of it. Ultimately, we have two very good defenses, but I trust Bobby Mo to get more “hustle” points in this game, ultimately covering the spread.
