#22 UCLA vs Rutgers Bet
We head over to Jersey Mike’s Arena, where the Scarlet Knights host the UCLA Bruins in a Monday evening Big Ten showdown. The Bruins are in freefall as a team. Head coach Mick Cronin had some choice words for his players, and they have lost three straight since their big win over Gonzaga. The Scarlet Knights have also been struggling, losing four of their last five games. This will be Rutgers’ third straight home game, and they desperately need a win tonight.
Given how poorly both teams have been playing, this is a quick-hit spot. Take the Scarlet Knights’ first-half team total over 31.5 (-120). UCLA has consistently struggled defensively on the road, regularly allowing this number. Meanwhile, Rutgers has been averaging 37 points per game at home.
Bounce Back Knights
The Scarlet Knights’ offense has been rough in their last two matchups, shooting just 28-for-76 (36.8 percent) from the floor and 14-for-49 (28 percent) from beyond the arc. Despite this, Rutgers ranks fifth in consistency according to Haslametrics, while UCLA sits at 62nd worst. Haslametrics also highlights Rutgers’ advantages in home court, strength of schedule, and momentum. Expect the Scarlet Knights’ offense to bounce back in this matchup.
Away from home this season, the Bruins rank 265th in two-point defense, 20th worst in turnover offense, and 316th in block percentage defense. Additionally, they struggle to keep opponents off the free throw line, ranking 303rd. This is a huge plus for Rutgers, who will need all the free opportunities they can get, as they rank 336th in free throw percentage. Will this prop come down to free throws? It is college basketball—it always does. However, against top-100 teams, Rutgers improves to 178th in free throw percentage. That is based on an eight-game sample size.
Since their win over Gonzaga, the Bruins have been allowing 33.6 points per half. In their last two games, they have allowed over this number in both. Maryland, who runs at a pace similar to Rutgers, scored 40 points in the first half against UCLA on Friday.
Rutgers is a team that loves to run, ranked 70th in the nation in pace, while UCLA is much slower, ranked in the mid-200s. The home team typically dictates the pace of play, so Rutgers should be able to force UCLA to play their style of basketball.
This has to be a spot where Rutgers shows up. They are too talented to keep having sluggish games. There is no better opportunity than this one, facing a team dealing with locker room issues and a coach who was just ejected in their last game against Maryland.
Get in. Get out. Rutgers’ first-half team total over.
Best Bet: Rutgers 1st Half Team Total Over 31.5 (-120) on BetOnline
