NCAA Basketball Best Bets – December 11th, 2024
Eastern Kentucky vs Pittsburgh Predictions
Best Bets: EKY/Pitt Over 149.5 (-115) BetOnline
We are backing both teams in what should be a track meet tonight. The Panthers are back at home, and they are plenty fast already. They rank 142nd in possessions per game already this season, but at home they turn it into overdrive. Pittsburgh speeds up to 64th overall in pace at home, gaining an extra 5 trips up and down the court.
They have a Top 25 offense in efficiency and turnover rate, rank 50th in eFG%, plus their 3P Rate and 3P% improve drastically. Pittsburgh shoots over 43% of their shots from deep, watching their shooting percentage climb from 32 to 37% by just being in their home gym. After a rough stretch on the road against some good teams, it will be nice for Pittsburgh to be back in front of their home crowd.
As for the Colonels of Eastern Kentucky, they are no stranger to playing fast, in fact, they prefer it. They are a Top 150 team in terms of pace, and their offensive numbers improve on the road, putting them in the Top 70 of both offensive efficiency and eFG% on the road this year. Based only on the number of possessions in this game, I don’t think we have an issue getting 150 points out of these two teams.
Dartmouth vs Notre Dame Predictions
Best Bets: Dartmouth/ND Under 139.5 (-113) BetOnline
Notre Dame started off hot, winning 4 straight including a blowout on the road against Georgetown. Then they lost 5 straight games, one against 148th ranked Elon, but the rest to Top 55 teams. However they bounced back at home, beating Syracuse to win their first ACC matchup of the season. Tonight they host Dartmouth, and I do not see them underestimating an opponent again.
Notre Dame plays extremely slow, ranking 297th in pace. This is the exact opposite of Dartmouth. The Ivy League boys are going to try and get the Irish to run, but I trust Shrewsberry to tell his team to relax, stay calm, and take care of the ball. The Irish have an incredibly efficient offense, but they severely struggle to get to the free throw line, ranking 302nd in FT Rate on offense. But, they make up for it by keeping their hands off on defense, ranking 35th in FT Rate defensively.
Now… Dartmouth. They rank north of 300 overall (308th), but they just took Loyola Chicago (182nd) to overtime, and they beat Boston College (154th), both games being on the road. This is a frisky team, and I trust Notre Dame to know this and come prepared. Dartmouth ranks 97th in pace, and I expect them to try and speed this game up.
They sped up Boston College, a team that ranks 261st in pace, and scored 88 points. Dartmouth does not have a good offense. They are north of 300 in overall efficiency, eFG%, and offensive rebound rate. However, if you give them enough chances, of course they are going to score. Defensively, Dartmouth crashes the glass well and is Top 60 in FT Rate.
If Notre Dame slows things down and controls the pace of this game, which they should considering they are the much better team at home, we should see a boring, low scoring game, staying well under 140.
Fresno State vs BYU Predictions
Best Bets: Fresno/BYU Over 155 (-110) BetOnline
This game will be the definition of Need for Speed. We can start with the hosts.
BYU ranks 124th in possessions per game, jumping to 108th at home. They shoot a ton of 3s, doing so on over 48% of possessions, and knocking down nearly 36% as a team at home. Overall offensively, they are Top 50 in Adjusted Efficiency, eFG%, Turnover and Offensive rebound rate, however they do struggle to get to the free throw line. BYU is coming off a blowout loss to Providence on the road, losing by 19 as 4.5 point favorites. They haven’t played a home game in over two weeks, and they’ve been sitting on this loss for 8 days. I think they come out fired up tonight.
Now, Fresno State is literally the 2nd fasted team in the nation. They generate over 75 possessions per game, which will only help the BYU shooters. The Bulldogs almost play too fast for themselves, because offensively, they aren’t too great, ranking north of 300 in efficiency and eFG%. However they get to the free throw line at an incredible rate, which could lead to plenty of points with the clock stopped.
Bottom line, BYU is incredible offensively. And if you speed them up, they are only going to find more of a rhythm and be able to put the ball in the bucket for efficiently. Tonight I see Fresno speeding up their hosts to their own demise, giving BYU plenty of opportunities to do their part in covering this number.
