Penn State vs #21 Michigan Best Bet
Two Big Ten teams in need of a bounce-back win face off tonight as the Penn State Nittany Lions head to Ann Arbor to take on the No. 21 Michigan Wolverines. Both teams are coming off losses—Penn State fell 76-75 to Iowa on Friday, while Michigan endured a blowout defeat against Purdue, losing 91-64.
The Wolverines need a strong response after shooting just 37% from the floor and 20.7% from beyond the arc in their last game. As nearly ten-point favorites at home, this appears to be an ideal opportunity for them to get back on track.
Michigan is 9-0 at home this season, boasting a top-30 offense and a top-15 defense. Most impressively, they rank first in effective field goal percentage (eFG%) offense and have the fifth-best two-point offense in the country. Defensively, they rank in the top 20 in eFG% defense and adjusted defensive efficiency.
Penn State, on the other hand, has struggled on the road, ranking as the 24th-worst team away from home according to Haslametrics. In five true road games, the Nittany Lions have had issues securing second-chance points, getting to the free-throw line, and shooting from deep—all areas where they rank in the high 200s nationally. They also rank 313th in block percentage on offense, highlighting their struggles inside.
Recently, Michigan has been inconsistent, winning three of their last five games but covering the spread in only two of those contests. Penn State, despite winning just one of their last five games, has covered the spread in four of those matchups. Even with the Nittany Lions’ recent success against the spread, this game feels like a prime spot to back Michigan. The Wolverines do not have any immediate distractions, with their next game against Rutgers still five days away. Penn State, however, has to prepare for a quick turnaround, hosting Ohio State on Thursday.
Michigan should be poised to snap out of its funk and dominate the Nittany Lions tonight. Give me the Wolverines to roll in this one.
