For the last several weeks, the only team that has been able to stop Gonzaga is Saint Mary’s. With a win over San Francisco in tonight’s West Coast Conference tournament semifinals (11:30 pm ET, ESPN2), the Bulldogs should get a crack at revenge tomorrow night at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
The second-seeded Bulldogs (23-8, 14-4 WCC) finished three games behind the Gaels (27-4, 17-1 WCC) and lost both regular season matchups to Saint Mary’s, which had not happened since the 2015-16 season.
That year, Gonzaga won the matchup that mattered, triumphing 85-75 to win the conference tournament. With a win tonight over the third-seeded Dons (24-8, 13-5 WCC), the Zags will have the opportunity to produce the same result this year, provided the top-seeded Gaels take care of business in their semifinal showdown with #9 Pepperdine, who has taken out #8 Portland, #5 Oregon State, and #4 Santa Clara after entering the WCC tournament with a 10-21 record.
While Gonzaga is looking to win a 22nd tournament title and reach the championship game for the 31st time, San Francisco is looking to play for the title for the first time since 1998, when they won their first and only WCC tournament title.
After receiving a bye through to the quarterfinals, the Dons advanced to the semifinals for the fourth straight season with an 86-75 win over #6 Washington State last night.

San Francisco vs Gonzaga Breakdown
Often enough, when two teams are separated by just one game in the conference standings, you would see a much closer spread than this.
Alas, that is not the case here. Gonzaga defeated San Francisco by double digits in both regular season matchups, winning 88-77 in Spokane on February 13 and 95-75 at the Chase Center in San Francisco on March 1.
With those two losses, the Dons have now lost 32 consecutive games to the Zags. There have been a lot of competitive performances in that stretch, but this is as one-sided a rivalry as you will see between two teams who are perennially among the top teams in their conference.
In the matchup nine days ago, Gonzaga jumped out to a 15-point halftime lead, and despite a big night by Marcus Williams (28 points, 11 of 15 FG, five assists), the Dogs dusted the Dons in the battle for the #2 seed.
Unfortunately, Williams, the team’s second leading scorer (15.1 PPG), assist leader (4.3 APG), and top three-point shooter (41.4%), is now sidelined due to eligibility concerns.
San Francisco was able to dispatch Washington State without him, thanks to a big game by Ryan Beasley (29 points, 10 of 15 FG, 4 of 8 3PT), who went in averaging only 7.7 PPG this season, but Williams’ absence looms rather large in a game of this magnitude, especially when Gonzaga has brushed aside everyone not named Saint Mary’s with relative ease in recent weeks.
San Francisco vs Gonzaga Prediction and Picks
The Dons did well to send Washington State packing by double digits even with leading scorer Malik Thomas (19.1 PPG) shooting only 6 of 17 from the field and missing all four of his three-point attempts, and while they won’t be in the March Madness bracket unless they win the automatic bid, this is a talented team that would hold its own against quite a few at-large hopefuls.
That said, Gonzaga is on another level, and it appears that in their current form, the Bulldogs have only one equal in the conference.
Don’t be surprised if the Dons actually keep it close for a while, however. The first matchup was tied at halftime, and the second one was a four-point game when Gonzaga went on a 17-6 run across the final 5:44 of the first half.
That ruined the first half spread pick for that previous San Francisco vs Gonzaga matchup, but with an 8.5-point first half spread this time, going back to the well doesn’t feel particularly risky even with Williams out.
And with the way that the first two games have gone, taking the over the first half total (72.5) and for the full game. San Francisco will have to score to stay within striking distance, and while that may be a tough ask for the full game, expect entertainment for the final game on tonight’s college basketball slate.
