Santa Clara Broncos vs Kentucky Wildcats Picks

<p>In 1996, <strong>Santa Clara</strong> entered the NCAA tournament as a No. 10 seed and upset Maryland in the first round, led by 30 points, a dozen assists, and six rebounds by Steve Nash. That was the last time the Broncos were a part of the <a href="/ncaab/march-madness/">March Madness</a> festivities. Following one of the school’s most successful seasons, Santa Clara is finally back in the Big Dance and will tip off Friday’s slate with its Midwest Region 10 vs. 7 matchup vs. <strong>Kentucky</strong> (12:15 p.m. ET, CBS).</p>
<p>While Nash went on to have a Hall of Fame career in the <a href="/nba/">NBA</a>, his alma mater wandered in the March Madness-less wilderness for three decades, despite recently producing two notable NBA talents in Jalen Williams and Brandon Podziemski.</p>
<p>But after knocking on the door a few times in recent years, Santa Clara secured a spot in the field of 68 with a 26-8 record, two wins over Saint Mary’s (including the de facto bid clincher in the West Coast Conference tournament semifinals), and solid overall metrics.</p>
<p>As a result, Herb Sendek will lead his fourth different program into March Madness, following his trips with Miami (OH), NC State, and Arizona State.</p>
<p>This Santa Clara vs. Kentucky matchup will be something of a full-circle moment for Sendek, who was a Wildcats assistant under Rick Pitino from 1989 to 1993. He helped lay the groundwork for Kentucky’s resurgence in the 1990s, which culminated in the Wildcats making their own special memories in 1996.</p>
<p>While that team is considered one of the program’s best, this bunch of Wildcats (21-13) is far off that lofty standard.</p>
<p>Still, <a href="https://affiliates.bettingnews.com/register/luckyrebel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lucky Rebel</a> and other top online sportsbooks think enough of their potential to make UK a favorite against <a href="/best-online-sportsbooks/">Santa Clara</a>. <h2>Santa Clara Prediction and Analysis</h2>
<p>Entering the NCAA tournament, Kentucky is hovering around the top 40 in adjusted offensive efficiency and around the top 30 in adjusted defensive efficiency.</p>
<p>That combination is typically the mark of a good team, which indicates the potential Kentucky has.</p>
<p>That may well be all that this team has, unless it all comes together over the next two couple of weeks.</p>
<p>However, it is just as likely that the Wildcats’ season will come to an end against Santa Clara, who will have every reason to be confident in coming away with a win vs. Kentucky.</p>
<p>There is something to be said for the five wins that Kentucky has over ranked teams this season, including wins at Arkansas and Tennessee and a win over St. John’s in Atlanta.</p>

<p>There is also something to be said for the Wildcats’ 13 losses, a 3-9 record when allowing 80+ points, nine losses to ranked teams, and maddening inconsistency at both ends.</p>
<p>Statistically, Kentucky ranks as one of the best teams in the SEC. But raw numbers can be deceiving, and they are in this case when those numbers have largely been built on results against mediocre or outright bad teams.</p>
<p>Offensively, numbers aren’t as deceiving. In fact, the raw numbers (11<sup>th</sup> in scoring, ninth in field goal percentage, and eighth in three-point shooting) paint a more accurate picture of Kentucky’s place as a mid-pack team in the SEC, a far cry from what they are perennially expected to be.</p>
<p>Santa Clara does not sit among the upper echelon of the teams that Kentucky has faced this season. However, the Broncos have nothing to lose and everything to gain here. That makes them an especially dangerous opponent against a team that is at the opposite end of the spectrum.</p>

<p>There isn&#8217;t one particular thing that the Broncos do exceptionally well, but they are consistent. Offensively, they haven&#8217;t been held to 75 or fewer points in consecutive games yet this season. On the other end, they haven&#8217;t allowed 75+ in consecutive games since allowing 75+ points in consecutive games against Minnesota, Utah Tech, New Mexico, and Arizona State.</p>
<p>That level of consistency on both ends can count for a lot against a team that hasn&#8217;t shown a great deal of consistency this season, unless you count being consistently inconsistent.</p>
<p>While Kentucky has the advantage in pedigree, talent, and probabilities, Bart Torvik&#8217;s projections for Friday&#8217;s slate have Santa Clara coming out on top. There&#8217;s every chance the Wildcats show their best in St. Louis, but I look for the Broncos to bag a big cat in their return to the big time.</p>
<h2>Santa Clara vs. Kentucky Best Bets</h2>

<p>Taking Santa Clara to win outright is the inclination here, but going for the spread is the safer play, given the projections of a close contest.</p>
<p>As noted above, Santa Clara has yet to be held to 75 or fewer points in consecutive games this season. When they hit the 75-point mark, they are 22-4 SU. On the other side, Kentucky is 7-10 this season when allowing 75+ points. Such surface numbers don&#8217;t fully take competition into consideration, but they do line up rather well to back up my sentiment and suggestion here.</p>
