Villanova vs #10 Marquette Best Bet
The Big East Conference game of the night features two teams coming off drastically different results. The Villanova Wildcats, fresh off an embarrassing loss to the Georgetown Hoyas, travel to Milwaukee to face the Golden Eagles, who dominated the Seton Hall Pirates in their previous game.
Marquette enters the matchup as 9.5-point favorites, but larger spreads have been a challenge for the Golden Eagles this season. They are 4-7 against the spread (ATS) when favored by 10 or more points and 7-8-1 ATS overall as favorites.
The line feels inflated for a team coming off such a poor performance, especially for a program as strong as Villanova. According to Haslametrics, Villanova ranks as the 168th-best team in away games, while Marquette ranks 293rd in home performances. This has “discounted price” for Villanova written all over it.
Despite their 1-4 record in true road games, the Wildcats boast a top-20 offense, highlighted by one of the most efficient perimeter shooting units in the country. Their defensive struggles are notable, but they still rank 87th in two-point defense and 39th in defensive rebounding. Villanova’s biggest issue is sending opponents to the free-throw line, where they rank 304th away from home. However, this works in their favor against Marquette, who ranks 31st-worst at getting to the line.
Marquette is a well-oiled machine at home but struggles from beyond the arc, ranking 273rd in three-point percentage. Defensively, their main vulnerability is protecting the paint, where they rank 218th in two-point defense.
Looking ahead, Villanova will have eight days off after this game before hosting Creighton next Saturday. Marquette, on the other hand, heads to Butler on Tuesday. This feels like a prime opportunity for the Wildcats to step up and make a statement before their much-needed break.
