Is this year the most anticipated edition of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament ever? With attention on women’s college basketball seemingly at an all-time high, it’s hard to argue against that. And with the women’s March Madness field now set and announced, we can start looking forward to what’s in store for the best and brightest in the sport.
With so many talented teams and players on display, there is a lot to look forward to over the next few weeks.
A lot of eyes will be on Iowa and record-setting star Caitlin Clark, who will be looking for a return trip to the national championship a year after falling to Angel Reese and LSU in Dallas.
The 2024 women’s Final Four will be held in Cleveland, Ohio, which is right in the middle of Big Ten country. So, many will be hoping and expecting Clark and the Hawkeyes, who are one of the four #1 seeds, to be one of the four teams to make it to the final weekend of the season.
Number One Seeds for the 2024 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament
- Albany 1: South Carolina Gamecocks (SEC)
- Portland 4: Texas Longhorns (Big 12)
- Albany 2: Iowa Hawkeyes (Big Ten)
- Portland 3: Southern California (Pac-12)
While Clark and her extraordinary exploits are drawing a lot of attention, the #1 Gamecocks are six wins from a perfect season and a second national championship in three seasons.
Last season, the Hawkeyes and Gamecocks met in the national semifinals, where Iowa upset Aliyah Boston and heavily favored South Carolina. If there is a rematch this year, it will be for the title on April 7, as the two teams are on opposite sides of the bracket.
Texas, who won the Big 12 Tournament title for the second time in three seasons, is a #1 seed for the first time since 2004. After making Mississippi State a national name, Vic Schaefer has returned the Longhorns to prominence and will be aiming to check off the one box he didn’t in his tenure with the Bulldogs.
USC, who won the Pac-12 Tournament for the first time since 2014, is a #1 seed for the first time since 1986. At that time, the women’s NCAA tournament had just 40 teams. But with freshman sensation JuJu Watkins leading the way, the Trojans have hit the heights again.
And what about the defending national champions? Reese and the Tigers could have a rematch with Clark and the Hawkeyes in the Elite Eight, as LSU is the #3 seed in Iowa’s regional.

Where does women’s March Madness take place this year?
This is an area where the women’s tournament differs significantly from the men’s tournament.
In the men’s tournament, the First Four is held entirely in Dayton, Ohio. The first and second rounds are held at eight different neutral sites around the country, then the regional semifinals and regional finals are held at four different neutral sites.
However, for the women’s tournament, the First Four, first round, and second round are held at campus sites.
The top four seeds in each region will host the first two rounds in their section of the women’s March Madness bracket, and any First Four matchups in those sections will be held in the corresponding locations. For example, the Holy Cross-UT Martin matchup in the First Four will be played in Iowa City, Iowa, where the winner will play #1 seed Iowa.
Also, instead of there being four different locations for the regional semifinals and regional finals, two regionals will be decided in Albany, New York, and the other two will be decided in Portland, Oregon. Last year was the first year that the women’s tournament used that format, with two regionals in Greenville, South Carolina and the other two in Seattle.

Who has won the most NCAA Division I women’s basketball championships?
Like UCLA on the men’s side, UConn leads the way on the women’s side with 11 national titles. The Huskies’ most recent title came in 2016, the last title of the first four-peat in women’s tournament history.
Tennessee, who has not won a national title since 2008, is next in line with eight championships.
Baylor (2005, 2012, 2019) and Stanford (1990, 1992, 2021) are the only other teams at least three national championships, while Louisiana Tech (1982 & 1988), Notre Dame (2001 & 2018), South Carolina (2017 & 2022), and USC (1983 & 1984) are the only other programs with multiple titles in the Division I era.
