As the 2024-25 college basketball season kicks off on Monday, all eyes are on Cooper Flagg, the five-star freshman from Duke, who averaged 16.5 PPG, 7.5 RPG, and 3.8 APG while leading his high school team to a national championship. However, at 2/1 odds, questions arise about the value of betting on a player yet to prove himself at the collegiate level. Meanwhile, seasoned veterans like Hunter Dickinson and Ryan Kalkbrenner, both with over 125 collegiate games, are poised to make a strong case for the Wooden Award this season.

Freshman Phenom
Cooper Flagg, the five-star freshman from Duke, averaged 16.5 PPG, 7.5 RPG, and 3.8 APG while leading his high school team to a perfect 33-0 record and a national championship title.
Flagg is an all-around player who can finish at the rim, hit jump shots, and create plays. Defensively, he excels as well, capable of guarding on-ball, in the post, and down low. His size and length make him an excellent shot blocker.
However, at 2/1, is there real value in a player who hasn’t yet proven himself? In an era where many athletes have been playing college basketball for over five years, accumulating 100+ games, awards, and tournament experience, it’s difficult to justify betting on him. Even if he dominates his freshman season, caution is advisable regarding that 2/1 price.
Veterans With Value
Two players in their fifth year of college basketball stand out: Hunter Dickinson, a former Michigan big man now entering his second season at Kansas, and Ryan Kalkbrenner from Creighton. Both have played over 125 collegiate games and are expected to dominate their conferences.
Ryan Kalkbrenner
The seven-footer from Creighton is coming off an impressive season, averaging 17.3 PPG, 7.6 RPG, and 3.1 BPG. As a three-time Big East Defensive Player of the Year, he offers significant value at 25/1 for the Wooden Award. He has consistently excelled in one of the most competitive conferences in college basketball and is arguably one of the best defenders in the sport. In a landscape where many players are entering their fifth year, Kalkbrenner represents a solid bet at 25/1.
Hunter Dickinson
Similar to Kalkbrenner, Dickinson has had a stellar career. Last season, the Kansas big man averaged 17.9 PPG, 10.9 RPG, and 1.4 BPG. While the odds for Dickinson might seem less appealing, players with extensive experience and demonstrated dominance can offer decent value in the race for the Wooden Award.
