The Detroit Lions are looking to capture the number one overall seed in the NFC, and while tonight’s game against the San Francisco 49ers might technically have little impact, they will certainly come prepared to battle their hosts for this victory. Jared Goff leads the Lions while Brock Purdy tries to rally the 49ers in order to end the season strong.

The 49ers are not playing for anything but pride at this point, having been eliminated from the playoffs. They have lost two straight games, and 5 of their L6 after making the Super Bowl last year. This team is clearly not the same without CMC, and it’s shown this season. The defense isn’t good enough to carry the entire load.

As for the Lions, they watched the Vikings win last night. With a win tonight, Detroit will be 14-2 and tied with Minnesota, facing them next week in the regular season finale. If Detroit were to lose and drop to 13-3, they could still win the division by beating the Vikings in Week 18, as the Lions would hold the tiebreaker by winning both head to head matchups. Point being, the Lions cannot clinch the division tonight. The big game is next week, but how does that impact this matchup?

Will San Francisco Rally for Morale Victory?

While the 49ers are out of contention completely, they still want to show up in their last home game for the fans. They travel to the desert next week, so this is it for the Bay Area homers this season. While the Lions are very depleted defensively, I could see them coasting in this game. I certainly want no business with the spread, as that hook is incredibly scary to me.

Like I said, Detroit really doesn’t need to win this game. Will they play hard? Sure. But are they going to pull out the entire playbook if they lead by double digits? Probably not. To me, this game has a 49ers backdoor cover written all over it, but you won’t catch me backing the home team with the points either.

The 49ers have allowed 29+ points in 3 of their L5 games, giving up that number to the Dolphins (22nd in scoring), the Packers (8th) and the Bills (2nd). The Lions are the highest scoring offense in the NFL, and even with their numbers dropping off on the road, I have faith in them scoring tonight. The 49ers are Bottom 12 in points allowed this year, while being Bottom 8 in 3rd down conversions allowed as well. I don’t see the Lions offense having a problem scoring, as they’ve put up 34+ points in the past three weeks.

I’ve done my fair share of fading incredible offenses (Miami in the Pop-Tarts Bowl) and quite frankly I’m done with it. The Lions score. Plain and simple. They put up points on the board in a multitude of ways, and everyone in the league has had trouble slowing them down.

The Lions were held to 16 points but the Buccaneers in Tampa Bay in Week 2, but other than that, they have scored 20+ in every other contest. They’ve scored 28 points in 8/15 games so far this season, and yes, it is asking a lot. But this year San Francisco does not have the defense to slow them down, especially without CB Charvarius Ward in the secondary. Give me Detroit to leave no doubt and put the ball in the end zone plenty tonight.
