Chiefs vs Steelers Predictions
Christmas Day NFL action delivers an exciting showdown as the 10-5 Pittsburgh Steelers host the 14-1 Kansas City Chiefs in what promises to be a thrilling game. Both teams have already secured playoff berths, but the Chiefs are looking to lock up the top spot in the AFC. With one more win, Kansas City would secure the number one seed, giving Patrick Mahomes and the starters nearly a month off—an extended break from December 25 to January 17. This provides extra motivation for the Chiefs, while the Steelers have plenty of incentive to play spoiler.
Steelers’ Struggles
Pittsburgh is coming off a challenging stretch, losing back-to-back road games against Philadelphia and Baltimore by two touchdowns each. Now, on a short week, they look to rebound at home against a red-hot Chiefs team. Kansas City has been dominant all season and enters this game on a five-game win streak, going 5-0 straight up but just 2-3 against the spread. However, those victories have come against some of the league’s weaker opponents—Carolina, Las Vegas, and Cleveland.
The Steelers’ defense, which has allowed fewer than 16 points per game at home this season, presents a tougher challenge. Despite giving up 61 points over the last two games, this unit is one of the league’s best at stopping both the run and the pass. Facing the Chiefs could be an opportunity for the Steelers’ defense to channel their frustration into a standout performance.
Trends
Home underdogs on Christmas? Count me in. The Chiefs have been winning, but not by wide margins. This season, 40% of their victories (six games) have been by three points or fewer, and 53% (eight games) have been by five points or fewer. Kansas City has struggled to cover spreads, going 6-8-1 (40%).
On the other hand, Pittsburgh has excelled against the spread, posting a 10-5 record (66%). Head coach Mike Tomlin thrives as an underdog, with a career record of 41-28-1 in such situations—a nearly 60% success rate. Getting a three-point cushion as a home team against one of the league’s best feels like the smarter play, especially when considering the Chiefs’ tendency to narrowly escape games.
