Packers vs. Lions Analysis & Breakdown
Best Division in Football
It’s by no means a hot take, but the NFC North is the best division in football; its clear. The North has 3 teams with 9 or more wins, a combined record of 30-6 and 3 of the 6 losses have been in-division games. The Packers, Lions and Vikings all rank in the top 9 for points per game, passing yards per game and total touchdowns per game.
The Lions enter this game with a perfect 3-0 record in divisional play, with close wins over both the Vikings and Bears; but a 10-point win over the Packers. Goff has looked fantastic against the division, averaging 215 passing yards per game, with a 75% completion rate and 5 touchdowns.
On the other side, Jordan Love and the Packers have won 4 straight games and 7 of their L8 overall. Love has played in just 10 of the Packers 12 games this year, but he’s averaging over 250 passing yards per game and he’s added 20 touchdowns threw the air.
Bad Blood
Last year we saw the Jordan Love vs. Jared Goff version of this NFC North Rivalry take shape. Both Love and Goff each recorded a win over the other last year, with both games going in favour of the road team. Last year, on Thanksgiving, the Packers went into Ford Field and beat the Lions on their own field.
This year, the Lions came out mad. Amon-Ra St. Brown was spotted leaving the game in Week 9 wearing a “F*** Green Bay” hoodie and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Packers still remember that. The Lions obviously still remember last year’s loss, at home, on Thanksgiving.
With so much history between these division rivals, but so many new faces on each team; look for the newest iteration of the Lions vs. Packers to leave us with some lasting memories.
Iron sharpens iron.
Jayden Reed o61.5 Receiving Yards (-108)
It’s tough betting on anyone in the Green Bay receiving room, not due to lack of talent, but because it’s someone new every single night. The Packers are one of the few elite teams in the NFL without a true WR1 on the roster, but as it stands right now, that role belongs to Jayden Reed.
Reed leads the Packers in targets this year, catching 44 of his 58 targets for 693 yards on the year. He’s averaging just under 60 yards per game but has really struggled to clear this line over the L7 weeks. Reed’s surpassed 30 yards just twice over his L7 games, recording 113 receiving yards the last time these two teams met.
Last week we saw Reed targeted 6 times, twice in the red zone, both he would secure for a touchdown. He’s recorded 6+ targets just two times in his L5 games but yet the line still sits at 61.5.
The Lions’ pass defense has been their achilles heel this year. They rank 25th in pass yards allowed and dead last in receiving yards allowed to opposing WRs. Detroit is giving up an average of 76 receiving yards per game to opposing WR1s and they’ve allowed 8 of the 12 to clear this line. Of the 10 passing touchdowns the Lions have allowed this year, 9 have come to opposing WRs.

Sam LaPorta o38.5 Receiving Yards (-109)
The Packers have struggled against opposing TEs this year, giving up 45.2 receiving yards per game to opposing TEs. This year, LaPorta has taken a bit of a backseat in the receiving yards department, he’s averaging just 35.5 receiving yards per game this year; about 20 yards short of what he finished last year averaging.
Last year, in two games against the Packers; LaPorta recorded 9 receptions on 13 targets, 103 receiving yards and 1 touchdown. In their lone game this year, LaPorta finished saw just 3 targets, catching 2 for just 28 yards.
Over the L5 weeks, LaPorta has recorded 6+ targets in 4 of the 5 games, but he’s hit this receiving line in just two of these games and he’s finished with fewer than 4 receptions in 4 of the 5 games.
Tonight against a stingy Packers secondary, I think the Lions will be forced to throw the ball just a little more and we should see LaPorta utilized heavily because of it. The Packers rank 7th in receiving yards allowed to WRs but 26th in yards allowed to TEs.
Look for LaPorta’s big body on the inside to break a few tackles and get us the 40 yards we need.
