In football, scoring the opening points does not guarantee success, but an early hole can be hard to come back from. That is the case for any game at any level, but in a game the magnitude of the Super Bowl, the first score or a fast start is even more important.
Today, Super Bowl 58 will take place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. Fans of the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs will be hoping their team scores first, but is it a good omen for the team that does?
Last year, the Philadelphia Eagles scored first, but the Chiefs, who trailed by ten points at halftime, emerged victorious and hoisted the hallowed Lombardi Trophy after an epic encounter in Glendale, Arizona.
Fans aren’t the only people who will be invested in who scores first in the Super Bowl, either.
The first points of the game, whether they are scored by the 49ers or Chiefs, will determine the fate of Super Bowl first score bets from Kalamazoo to Kissimmee.

Best Super Bowl First Score Bets
So, which first scoring play bets should you consider for the upcoming Super Bowl matchup? Who is most likely to score first, and what is the first score most likely to be?
Let’s look at Super Bowl first score history and trends.
Super Bowl First Score History and Trends
Who Scored First in the 2023 Super Bowl?
In Super Bowl 57, the Philadelphia Eagles scored first against the Kansas City Chiefs. The first score at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona was a one-yard rushing touchdown by Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, which came with 10:09 left in the first quarter.
Field Goals Edge Touchdowns in Recent and All-Time Super Bowl First Score History
There was only one field goal in the first Super Bowl, and it was not the first score or a meaningful score.
Chiefs kicker Mike Mercer kicked the first field goal in Super Bowl history, trimming the deficit to 14-10 shortly before halftime and accounting for what would be the Kansas City’s final points of a 35-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl I.
The first touchdown in Super Bowl history–and the first score in Super Bowl history–was a 37-yard touchdown pass from Bart Starr to wide receiver Mike McGee, which put the Packers ahead of the Chiefs with 6:04 remaining in the first quarter.
While a touchdown was the first score of the past two Super Bowls and is favored to be the first score of Super Bowl 58, field goals have the overall edge more recently. In the eight most recent Super Bowls, a field goal has been the first score five times.
Perhaps surprisingly, a defensive touchdown has never been the first score. Still, tossing a few bucks on the opening score being a safety or a defensive or special teams touchdown is worthwhile. The risk is low, and the potential rewards are high.
It is also surprising that rushing touchdowns have been the first score so rarely. Last year, a rushing touchdown was the first score of the Super Bowl for just the seventh time and the first since 2017.
So, if you have bet on Super Bowl first touchdown scorer odds along with Super Bowl first scoring play odds, you may be sweating more if you’re locked in on Isiah Pacheco instead of Christian McCaffrey. Pacheco has ten rushing touchdowns but only two receiving scores this season, while McCaffrey has seven receiving touchdowns in addition to his 18 rushing touchdowns.
Does the First Score of the Super Bowl Often Impact the Super Bowl Result?
But will scoring first bode well for the scorer?
Historically, the first team to score has an overwhelming edge in title wins. Thus far, the team to score first in the Super Bowl has gone on to win the game 37 of 57 times, a success rate of 64.9 percent. However, the team to score first has come out on the losing end four times in the last seven Super Bowls. That includes the previous championship matchup between the 49ers and Chiefs four years ago, as well as Super Bowl LI, which saw the New England Patriots make the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history to stun the Atlanta Falcons.
If you are betting on the moneyline, you will have more reason to feel confident if your pick opens the scoring with a touchdown rather than a field goal.
Teams who have scored a touchdown to take the first lead of the big game have gone on to win 66.7 percent of the time (18 of 27 times), while teams who went ahead with a field goal have gone on to win only 59 percent of the time (16 of 27 times).
