Super Bowl Player Prop Betting Strategy
While most Super Bowl player prop bets are fairly self-explanatory, the wealth of available options can be pretty overwhelming whether you are a new bettor or an experienced bettor.
It is important to find the betting approach that works best for you. Some people prefer to spread their funds across several options. Others would much rather zero in on one or two options.
Whether you are invested in a number of Super Bowl player props or just one option, it is very wise to do your research.
Knowing matchup information, noteworthy team and individual statistics on both sides, the weather forecast, and results from any head-to-head matchup that occurred during the season can help you make the most informed decisions.
Now, if you are not a regular bettor or much of a football or sports fan and are just choosing players that sound familiar, then that advice does not have to apply to you.
History of Super Bowl Player Props Betting
In the 1985 NFL season, the Chicago Bears dominated the league, as a devastating defense led the way to an almost-perfect campaign. The “Monsters of the Midway” helped the Bears start 12-0 and compile a 15-1 record in the regular season.
Their dominance continued on into the postseason. In their first two playoff games, they outscored their opposition 91-20 to advance to Super Bowl XX.
With a rout of the New England Patriots to win the title in New Orleans, the Bears wrapped up one of the greatest seasons in NFL history.
Among the names on that dominant defense were Hall of Famers Richard Dent, Dan Hampton, and Mike Singletary, and future NFL head coaches Singletary, Leslie Frazier, and Ron Rivera.
“The Fridge” Opens the Door for Super Bowl Player Prop Betting
Another notable name was rookie defensive tackle William “Refrigerator” Perry, the 22nd overall pick in the 1985 NFL Draft out of Clemson.
During the season, Perry made an instant impact defensively, tallying 31 tackles and recording five sacks. But he also weas used as a fullback throughout the season, and he scored two touchdowns in five carries.
Because of Perry’s versatility and the fact that the Bears were such a heavy favorite in Super Bowl XX–they were favored by 10 over the Patriots, who were the fifth seed in the AFC–Las Vegas oddsmakers decided to offer bets on if “The Fridge” would score a touchdown.
According to sportsintel.com, it was Bovada Palace who offered +2000 odds on if Perry would hit paydirt.
Perry did in fact score the Bears’ final touchdown of the game, reaching the end zone from a yard out to make it 44-3 in the third quarter. The Bears went on to win 46-10 and claim their first and only Super Bowl title to date.
While that was the high point for the Bears in the Super Bowl era, it was just the beginning for Super Bowl player props and prop betting in general.
Now, prop betting garners as much attention week in, week out as spread, total, and moneyline betting do. It is safe to say that the money that Bovada Palace lost on that initial wager has been recouped more than a few times over in the three and a half decades since.
