Records are meant to be broken, but some records are harder to break than others. And when it comes to Super Bowl records, some should remain untouched following the Super Bowl 59 matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles, which will take place on Sunday, February 9 at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans (6:30 pm ET, FOX).
The Eagles scored 55 points against the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship Game, but they likely won’t reach or exceed that number against the Chiefs. If they were to match it, it would match the record for the most points by one team in a Super Bowl. That record was set by the San Francisco 49ers in their 45-point Super Bowl XIV rout of the Denver Broncos. Interestingly, that game was also played at the Superdome in New Orleans.
Neither Jalen Hurts nor Patrick Mahomes is likely to accumulate the record 505 passing yards that five-time Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady recorded in a losing effort against the Eagles in Super Bowl LII.
Also, it is unlikely that a pass-catcher on either side will equal or surpass the 215 receiving yards that legendary receiver Jerry Rice had against the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII.
However, some records may fall or at least receive a big challenge.
When the Chiefs and Eagles met in Super Bowl 57 two years ago, they played out the third highest-scoring Super Bowl ever in Kansas City’s 38-35. Also, Hurts tied a 25-year-old record for the most rushing touchdowns in a single Super Bowl with three rushing scores in a losing effort.
Last year, BetOnline had odds for a number of Super Bowl records markets. Odds for this year’s matchup have yet to be released, but there are several intriguing potential options.
Notable Super Bowl Individual and Team Records
In last year’s Super Bowl 58 matchup between the Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, the two teams either tied or broke several individual and team records.
Most notably, the record for the longest field goal in Super Bowl history fell not once, but twice.
Super Bowl first score bets on a field goal cashed with 14:48 left in the first half when 49ers kicker Jake Moody nailed a record-breaking 55-yarder.
His place in the record books was short-lived, however. A little over a quarter and a half later, Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker stepped up and booted a 57-yarder to push Moody’s kick into second all-time.
Additionally, last year’s Super Bowl was just the second to be decided in overtime. And with the Chiefs walking it off on Mecole Hardman’s touchdown catch with three seconds left in the first 15-minute overtime period, Super Bowl 58 set a record for the longest Super Bowl ever in terms of game length.
Which Super Bowl player and team records might merit a close watch in this year’s big game?
The biggest storyline of the evening will be Kansas City’s pursuit of the first three-peat in Super Bowl history. As it is, the Chiefs are the first team to reach the Super Bowl in three consecutive seasons. Also, they are one of just nine teams (and one of only two in the 21st century) with back-to-back titles.
Here are some of the other notable Super Bowl records that could be rewritten in New Orleans.
Super Bowl Records
Most Super Bowl wins by a kicker: Adam Vinatieri (four)
If the Chiefs defeat the Eagles in New Orleans, Butker will join Vinatieri (Super Bowls 36, 38, and 39 with the Patriots and Super Bowl 41 with the Colts) as the only kickers with four or more Super Bowl wins.
Butker, who set a new career record for most field goals in the Super Bowl, could also tie Vinatieri for the most successful PATs if he connects on three in Super Bowl LIX.
Most Rushing Yards in a Super Bowl (Single Game): Timmy Smith (204 in Super Bowl XXII)
In the regular season, Eagles running back Saquon Barkley (2,005 yards in 16 games) became the ninth player in NFL history to run for 2,000 or more yards in a season.
Barkley has followed that up by rushing for 119, 205, and 118 yards in three playoff games, taking his total for the entire season to 2,447 yards in 19 games.
Barkley will be the second member of the 2,000-yard club to play in the Super Bowl in their 2,000-yard season. The other, Hall of Famer Terrell Davis, ran for 102 yards on 25 carries when the Denver Broncos defeated the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl XXXIII.
It has been an outstanding debut season in Philly from the former #2 overall pick, but will he cap it with a record-breaking or championship-winning performance in NOLA?
Longest Touchdown Run by a Quarterback: Colin Kaepernick (15 yards in Super Bowl XLVII)
That the longest rushing touchdown by a quarterback in Super Bowl history is only 15 yards may surprise many. But this record may not last for much longer, and it may very well fall this year.
Hurts, who ran for 630 yards and 14 touchdowns in the regular season and has 122 yards and four rushing touchdowns in the playoffs, has a run of 15 or more yards in ten of his 18 games this season.
He seems the likeliest candidate to break this mark, but do not count out Mahomes. He had two rushing touchdowns against the Bills in the AFC Championship Game, and he is a threat to make plays with his legs if he needs to.
