See Picks & Statistics For The GameThe Calgary Flames will host the New York Islanders tonight at the Scotiabank Saddledome Arena. This will be the 1st time the 2 teams meet this season. Both teams are having fair starts to the season.
New York is on their 4th game of a 5-game road trip. This is the 4th game on the West Coast, and they wrap it up in Detroit for the 5th game. The Islanders are 7-7-4 this season and 4th in the Metro Division. They’re 4-4-2 in their last 10 games and 1-1-1 in the 1st 3 games on the road trip.
For whatever reason, the Islanders play decent on the road. They’re 5-4-2 so far this year, which is better than their 2-3-2 record. Offensively, the Islanders face their same problem as previous years and that is finding the back of the net.
The Islanders also used to play shut down defense and that has changed. Their allowing the 23rd most shots on goal per game this season. Another sore spot is their penalty kill, where they rank 29th in the league. Blowing leads due to lack of defense has been another problem this season.
Their lack of defense puts a lot of pressure on the goaltenders. Expected in net tonight is Semyon Varlamov who is 3-3-1 this season. He has a 2.86 GAA and a .892 save percentage.
Calgary wants to keep winning and especially in front of the home crowd
The Flames are playing with a heavy heart this season as they lost long time player Johnny Gaudreau to a car accident. Calgary is 9-6-3 so far this year and 4th in the Pacific. At home, they have been comfortable with a 6-3-0 record.
Coming in off a win, the Flames will look to keep it going. They’re 4-4-2 in their last 1o games and 2-2-1 in their last 5 games. As you can see, very middle of the road for this team right now.
They are not strong offensively, ranking towards the bottom of the league for goals scored per game. Calgary, just like the New York, have a really bad power play, ranking 31st in the league. On defense, they defend the net well but allow a lot of shots on goal and have a horrible penalty kill.
Expected in net tonight is Dustin Wolf. Wolf has been great to start the season with a 6-2-1. He has a 2.53 GAA and a .921 save percentage. If he can keep up his play, he will pose a big problem for the Islanders. Let’s check out the odds and get into the picks.

With the way the line is set, the sportsbooks have this as a pick em as well. I can see why with how both teams are playing, but I lean the Islanders in this one. It’s boarder line a homer pick because I believe in this team, but there are other reasons.
Last game, as usual lately, the Islanders blew their game vs the Kraken after taking the lead in the 3rd period. This is a good bounce back spot for the Islanders to get a road win and some momentum. Calgary isn’t the most offensive team, like the Islanders, so it’ll be a matter of who has more offense.
The Islanders really need this win too. They’re tied with the Flyers for 5th in the Metro and could take possession. It’ll them 3 points behind the 4th seed. Not bad for a team who is missing 2 of their best offensive players.
There are 2 guys I like to get their shots on goal tonight. Both have great history vs each other and those guys are Kyle Palmieri and Mikael Backlund. Backlund has been playing great hitting his shots in his last 4 out of 5 games and same vs the Islanders. Palmieri on the flip side has been cold as ice, and I expect him to snap out of it vs a team he has good history against.
