The playoff push is here, and we’re headed to a battle in the Metro Division for Islanders vs Hurricanes picks. This afternoon, the New York Islanders will take on the Carolina Hurricanes at the Lenovo Center. These 2 teams last met in January and the Islanders pulled out a 3-2 win.
New York is 32-30-10 this season and 6th in the Metro Division. They took a bad loss to the Lightning yesterday, a game they needed to win to stay in the playoff hunt. The Isles now currently sit 4 points out of the 2nd Wild Card spot, and they’ll be tested again today.
In their last 10 games, the Islanders are 3-4-3 and are on a 4-game losing streak. They’re 15-16-5 on the road this season and 9-7-3 in divisional matchups. Although their recent struggles, the Islanders are 3-2-0 in their last 5 games vs the Canes.
Both sides of the ice have been a problem for the Islanders. Ranking in the bottom of the league for goals scored and shooting percentage, their 30 shots on goal per game really don’t mean much. Defensively, allowing 3 goals and 30 shots on goal per game is not sustainable. Special teams are still their killer, ranking in the bottom of the league for both power play and penalty kill.
Goalie Marcus Hogberg has been confirmed to start. He is 2-3-1 this season with a 1.91 GAA and a .931 save percentage. Hogberg allowed 2 goals in the game vs the Canes earlier this season and Sorokin got the win in OT.
Carolina looks to stay hot against their division rival

Hurricanes defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere takes a shot on goal.
The Hurricanes are 44-24-4 this season and 2nd in the Metro Division. They come into this game off a win over the Canadians on Friday night. Carolina is 8-2-0 in their last 10 games, 28-18-1 at home and a 15-4-3 in divisional matchups.
This offense is powerful, even with the pieces they have lost in Martin Necas and Mikko Rantanen. They rank 9th in goals scored and 2nd in shots on goal per game. Although Carolina puts up a lot of shots, they rank 20th in shooting percentage.
On defense, the Canes are a tough team. They rank 7th in goals allowed and 1st in shots on goal per game. Carolina also has the best penalty kill in the league while committing almost 4 penalties per game. They completely smother teams in the defensive zone from getting pucks through.
In net, we’re expected to see Pyotr Kochetkov. He is 25-13-3 this year with a 2.50 GAA and a .901 save percentage. Kochetkov allowed 3 goals in the last game these 2 teams played and will be looking to get a big W today.

As much as I want the Isles to win this game, I’m not 100% sold they pull this one off (even though they always win games they have no business winning!). But I do think we see lots of goals, especially on the Canes side.
Hogberg has been solid in net, but the Canes offense is crafty and fast. They may not rank very high in the league for power play conversion, but the Isles penalty kill is so terrible that is a great spot for them to get some goals.
New York will have to do a lot to get this win, and it’ll start on slowing down the Canes. With the way they’ve been playing, it’s going to be a tough task. Give me Hogberg over his saves line as the Canes will pepper him. He should have 30+ saves at the end of this game.
I like for the d-men of each team to put up shots. Give me Tony DeAngelo to get 2 or more shots on goal for -125. He has hit his mark in every game he has played vs his former team. I also like Brent Burns to get 2 or more shots on goal for -188. You can take him to 3 shots as he has had 4 shots vs the Isles at home in 3 of his last 5 games.
