We have the battle of the struggle bus tonight. The New York Islanders will play the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place. Both of these teams are having rough starts to the season with the injury bug visiting them.
New York is 6-6-3 to start the season and 5th in the Metro Division. They lost their last game in overtime to the Devils Saturday after blowing a 2-goal lead. The Islanders are 4-5-1 in their last 10 games as well.
The injury bug hit the Islanders and hard. On the long-term injured reserve are Anthony Duclair and Mat Barzal. Barzel just went out for 4-6 weeks with an upper body injury, but Duclair should be due back soon from a leg injury.
With that hit to their offense, guys like captain Anders Lee, Kyle Palmieri and Bo Horvat have all stepped up. Horvat and Palmieri are tied for the team lead in points with 12 each. Rookie Maxim Tsyplakov has made himself comfortable with 9 points and can be a great addition for the Islanders.
Expected in net for the Islanders is Ilya Sorokin. He is 4-3-2 to start the season with a 2.52 GAA and a .916 save percentage. The Islanders really need to protect him better as he could be one of the best goalies in the league.
Edmonton will look to carry momentum from Saturday’s win
Edmonton is 7-7-1 on the season and 5th in the Pacific Division. They’re coming off a nice 7-3 win over the Canucks this past Saturday but are 5-4-1 in their last 10 games. Not the exact start you’d expect from the defending Western Conference champs.
Connor McDavid sustained an ankle injury that sidelined him for a few games. He returned last game and recorded 1 goal and 2 assists. Save to say his ankle is just fine (lol).
Leon Draisaitl leads the team in goals (10) and points (18). He has been holding it down for the lack of offense from guys like Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Defenseman Evan Bouchard is also having a slow start to the season after the big year he had last year.
Goalie Stuart Skinner is expected to be in next tonight. He’s 4-5-1 in 10 games 10 started this year with a 3.25 GAA and a .883 save percentage. Skinner had a great season last year and if we all remember right – the Oilers had a rough start last year as well.

I know it seems homer, but the Islanders need a bounce back after blowing their last game. This is a game where on paper they may be out matched, but on the ice, I don’t think so.
We’re going to pay the juice man here and take the spread. It should be a close game between 2 teams who are struggling and have decent goaltending. The Oilers have a powerhouse offense, but with the way they’ve been playing – I think the Islanders will hang.
Expect the Oilers to try and get ahead early. McDavid and co will pressure right from the start. Both teams will want to be careful and stay out of the penalty box because both teams have the worst penalty kills in the league.
The Islanders will need Bo Horvat and Anders Lee to generate some offense and guys like Noah Dobson will need to protect Sorokin. If they can protect Sorokin, then they have a chance.
I like both goalies for over their saves lines in this game. Both teams rank in the top 5 of the league for shots on goal per game. The Islanders allow more than the Oilers, but I think we see a lot of offense from both sides.
