2024 French Open Men’s Singles Odds & Favorites: Don’t Look Beyond the Big Names

The weather has not been overly accommodating thus far, but the French Open men’s and women’s singles draws are both now down to 32 players each, with third round action set to take place today and tomorrow.

In men’s singles, 21 of 32 seeded players are still alive. That includes each of the top 15 seeds. In the third round, six matches will take place between seeded players, so we’ll see some of the more notable names in the draw depart starting today.

For now, the likes of Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Daniil Medvedev are still going strong. Sinner (versus Pavel Kotov) and Alcaraz (versus #27 Seb Korda) will be on the court today, while Djokovic (versus #30 Lorenzo Musetti) and Medvedev (versus Tomas Machac) will be in action tomorrow.

Korda is one of four Americans still in the field, all of whom are seeded. The others are Taylor Fritz (the #12 seed), Tommy Paul (the #14 seed), and Ben Shelton (the #15 seed). Frances Tiafoe, the #25 seed, fell yesterday to Denis Shapovalov, who is still trying to move up the rankings after missing several months last year due to a knee injury.

No American man has won a Grand Slam singles title since Andy Roddick’s 2003 US Open victory. Will that change in this tournament? It’s highly unlikely, especially because the trophy is not likely to go beyond one of the big names and top seeds.

2024 French Open Men’s Singles Favorites

Carlos Alcaraz (+240)

Alcaraz’s French Open prep was affected by a right forearm injury that limited him to one tournament (the Madrid Open, where he lost in the quarterfinals as the two-time defending champion) during the April and May clay swing.

But it looks like that injury is behind him, as he has opened the tournament with a straight-sets win over American JJ Wolf and a four-set win over qualifier Jesper de Jong. De Jong did push him harder than expected, but that might help him sharpen his focus and his game for the stiffer challenges that are to come.

Jannik Sinner (+375)

Since being upset by Daniel Altmaier in the second round of last year’s French Open, Sinner has arguably been the best player in the world.

Like Alcaraz, his French Open prep was limited. After reaching the quarters of the Madrid Masters, he withdrew from his scheduled match with Felix Auger-Aliassime due to a hip injury and didn’t play again until meeting and beating Christopher Eubanks in the first round of the French Open.

It looks like he is good to go, judging from his straight-sets wins over Eubanks and Richard Gasquet. But the last time he faced Kotov, he aggravated the hip injury that blunted his prep for Roland Garros.

If the hip issue doesn’t flare up, this could be a big several days for the Italian.

Along with going two for two in 2024 Grand Slam tournaments following his Australian Open win, Sinner could become the new world number one in the next week. If he reaches the final, he will take over top spot even if Djokovic wins the title.

Novak Djokovic (+400)

Alcaraz and Sinner may be the favorites according to the odds, but Djokovic, the defending French Open men’s singles champion, should be considered the man to beat until someone beats him.

Will that happen? It’s safe to say that he won’t give up his title or his number one ranking without a fight.
