A’ja Wilson Dominating WNBA MVP Race
A glance at BetOnline’s latest 2024 WNBA MVP odds reveals a clear-cut favorite in this year’s race. Las Vegas Aces superstar A’ja Wilson is the sportsbook’s current -3000 odds-on favorite, which carries an implied probability of 96.8%.
It isn’t surprising to see Wilson leading the pack given that she’s already a two-time WNBA MVP. If she maintains her lead, the ex-South Carolina center will join Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie, and Lauren Jackson as the only other players to be named Most Valuable Player three times. Considering how the trio dominated the league in the 2000s, that’s a good group to be a part of.
Even though Wilson has always been among the WNBA’s best players, she’s taken her game to the next level this season. The Columbia, SC native is averaging career highs in points (27.2), rebounds (12.0), steals (1.9), and blocks (2.9) while shooting 52.2% from the floor and 39.5% from deep. Without her stellar performance, the Las Vegas Aces likely wouldn’t be in the middle of another strong season.
Nobody has been able to slow down Las Vegas Aces C A’ja Wilson in 2024.
So, can anyone stop Wilson from claiming a third WNBA MVP award? Judging by BetOnline’s list, probably not seeing as how no one has better than +4000 odds to do so.
Sabrina Ionescu is having another All-Star caliber season, however, she’s only averaging 19.8 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.4 rebounds with .424/.356/.909 shooting splits. The Phoenix Mercury’s Kahleah Copper (23.2 PTS/4.6 REB/2.2 AST) has also been great this year but it wouldn’t be shocking if her lackluster efficiency (45.4 FG%, 33.1 3P%) prevents her from ascending the list.
Many basketball fans had high hopes for Caitlin Clark in her rookie season, though she only sits at +10000 to be named the 2024 MVP. Although she’s impressed with 17.1 points, 8.2 assists, and 5.4 rebounds through 26 games, the fact that she’s only shooting 40.5% from the floor and 32.7% from deep shows that the former Iowa guard has a long way to go before she’s in the Most Valuable Player conversation.
Unless she suffers a catastrophic injury, it’s hard to imagine Wilson falling out of the WNBA MVP race. She’s having one of the best seasons in league history and should remain ahead of the competition as long as she doesn’t change a thing about her game.
