Storm vs Liberty Prediction & Picks (5/20): A Big Night for Stewie Against Her Former Team?

Yesterday, the Seattle Storm picked up their first win of the new WNBA season, overcoming a spirited performance by the Washington Mystics to pull out an 84-75 win in D.C.

They don’t get much time to celebrate or reflect, as a matchup with former Storm star Breanna Stewart and the New York Liberty is ahead tonight at Barclays Center (7:00 pm ET, ESPN3).

While the Storm (1-2) are now off of the mark for 2024 after their win over the Mystics, the Liberty (3-0) are looking to become the first team to reach 4-0 this season. Entering tonight’s WNBA action, New York is one of four unblemished teams, with the Connecticut Sun (who visit Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever tonight), Las Vegas Aces, and Minnesota Lynx all at 2-0.

Seattle Storm vs New York Liberty Betting Analysis

After facing some struggles on the offensive end in two season-opening losses to the Minnesota Lynx, the Storm stepped up when needed to see off the Mystics yesterday.

In the first half, they scored 39 points to take a five-point lead into the locker room. However, they made only 38.5% of their shots in the first 20 minutes.

In the second half, they weren’t outstanding but improved to 44.8%, making 13 of 29 shots.

Three-point shooting continues to be a weak spot for the Storm, who have made only 11 of 49 (22.4%) from outside in their first three games, which is last in the WNBA.

To give themselves a chance to stay in the game with New York, some shots will need to start falling.

The onus is squarely on Jewell Loyd in that area. She scored a season-high 24 points against the Mystics but shot poorly yet again. She made only 6 of 19 shots from the field and missed all six of her three-point attempts, and through three games, she is shooting 22.0% (13 of 59) from the field and 20% (3 of 15) from three.

Just as importantly, the Storm will need to keep the Liberty somewhat in check on the other end. Through three games, New York is shooting a league-leading 47.1% from the field, and in Saturday’s 91-80 win over Indiana, they made 15 of 32 (46.9%) from three, a season high in makes and percentage.

Can they do that? Nneka Ogwumike may return to action today after missing yesterday’s games due to an ankle injury suffered in Friday’s 102-93 double-overtime loss at Minnesota, but it’s hard to see Seattle being able to keep New York from impressing and improving to 4-0.
