Types of NBA Odds
There are many types of NBA odds you can bet on at online sportsbooks. But on this page, you will find NBA moneyline odds, NBA point spread odds, and NBA over/under odds. Moneyline and spread betting odds are known as sides. Total odds are also known as over/under odds.
Moneyline & Spread Odds
When betting on moneyline and spread odds, you are betting directly on the outcome of the game in some fashion.
Moneyline odds are odds on which team will win the game. There is a favorite (typically noted with a “-“) and an underdog (typically noted with a “+”), and if the team you bet on wins, your bet wins whether they win by one point or 21.
With spread odds, you are betting on the favorite to either win by at least a certain number of points or for the underdog to win outright or lose by fewer than a certain number of points.
For example, if the Boston Celtics (-6.5) are favored by 6.5 points against the Philadelphia 76ers (+6.5), the Celtics must win by seven or more points to cover the -6.5-point spread and the 76ers must either win outright or lose by six or fewer points to cover the +6.5-point spread.
Total (a.k.a. Over/Under) Odds
When over/under betting, you are betting on the two teams to combine for more or fewer points than the listed total, regardless of the outcome of the game.
For example, if the listed total for a matchup between the Milwaukee Bucks and Indiana Pacers is 237.5, that means the two teams must combine for 238 or more points for bets on over 237.5 to win and for 237 or fewer points for bets on under 237.5 to win.
Other Types of NBA Odds
In addition to moneyline, spread, and over/under odds, you can make NBA prop bets and NBA futures bets at many sports betting sites.
The most popular type of NBA props are NBA player props, while there are also team props and game props.
Some types of NBA futures odds are NBA championship odds, NBA MVP odds, and NBA scoring leader odds.
Comparing NBA Odds
Why is comparing NBA odds useful for sports bettors?
By comparing odds, bettors can find the best betting value for a particular NBA betting line.
On this page, you can find and compare NBA odds from several reputable sportsbooks without having to go from sportsbook to sportsbook individually. Having everything in one place saves valuable time.
Also, finding the best value can boost your betting bankroll. Consistently finding the best value can be rather significant over the course of dozens or hundreds of successful bets.
If you can get -105 odds instead of -110 odds for a spread bet or +160 odds instead of +150 odds for a moneyline bet may not add much with a single bet unless you bet larger amounts, but those saved dollars or extra winnings will start to add up quickly if you bet on a lot of games.
What Factors Can Affect NBA Odds?
Weather conditions don’t come into play with NBA betting as they do with betting on the NFL, college football, MLB, or soccer. But there are several factors that can affect NBA odds.
Injuries and suspensions can be significant, along with rest advantages or disadvantages, such as when one team is on a back-to-back and the other has had a couple of days of rest.
Additionally, recent performances can play a key role. For the season, two teams may be mismatched in terms of where they are in the NBA standings. But if the inferior team is on a hot streak, they likely won’t be as much of an underdog as they would have been.
