For the first time since 2019, Formula 1 is in China, as the Chinese Grand Prix returns to the Shanghai International Circuit.
If you live in the United States and plan to burn the midnight oil to catch the fifth race of the 2024 F1 season, it is set to start at 3:00 am ET and will be broadcast on ESPN.
A lot has changed since the last Chinese Grand Prix, which took place in April 2019. At the time, Lewis Hamilton was on his way to winning his third consecutive title and his sixth overall, Mercedes was still hitting the heights as the dominant team on the grid, and Max Verstappen had only five career wins to his name.
Now, Verstappen and Red Bull are dominating at a level even Hamilton and Mercedes didn’t manage. A 58th career win for Verstappen looks highly likely to happen this weekend, as the reigning champion and points leader is on pole for the fifth straight time to open the season.
The race weekend has been eventful thus far, but will that carry over to the race? And what are the best bets for the action? Race predictions and picks are below, but first, let’s take a look at the odds.
Odds to Win the 2024 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix
- Max Verstappen -1400
- Sergio Perez +1100
- Charles Leclerc +2800
- Lando Norris +3300
- Carlos Sainz +5000
- Fernando Alonso +5000
- Oscar Piastri +6600
- George Russell +10000
- Lewis Hamilton +15000
- Nico Hulkenberg +40000

Chinese Grand Prix Predictions and Picks
Hamilton has won the Chinese Grand Prix a record six times (2008, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019), but he won’t be adding to that total this year.
His race weekend started rather well, as he finished second to Lando Norris in sprint qualifying and to Verstappen in the sprint race.
However, Hamilton was unable to even make it out of the first round of race qualifying. As a result, he will start 18th, with only Yuki Tsunoda and Logan Sargeant occupying space behind him.
Up front, it’s a Red Bull 1-2, with Verstappen on pole and Sergio Perez starting second. Fernando Alonso will start third as he seeks his first podium finish of the 2024 Formula 1 season. Norris will take aim at his second podium of the season from fourth on the grid.
If value is what you seek, then look no further than backing Norris to have the fastest lap (+1800).
Along with winning pole for each race, Verstappen has claimed fastest lap twice this season, first at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix and then at the Japanese Grand Prix, the most recent race.
But with Norris showing some speed thus far this weekend, it’s worth heavy consideration.
There isn’t a lot of serious betting value up and down the board, which is par for the course for many Formula 1 races. But another value spot is backing Valtteri Bottas to finish in the top ten (+125).
Bottas will start in that spot and has been running around the middle of the pack all weekend. He was ninth in sprint qualifying, 12th in the sprint, and tenth in race qualifying.
Bottas has finished in the points only six times in his last 39 races and has finished outside of the points in a dozen consecutive races. So, he is certainly due for a decent finish, and today may be the day for it.
