Canada vs. Greece Analysis & Breakdown
What a perfect game to start our tournament journey. My countrymen, the Canadians; against the Greek Freak and Greece. We’re in for a good one so strap in.
Both teams are coming into this tournament via very different routes. Giannis and Greece were forced to qualify via Olympic Qualifiers that saw them dominate their group.
Greece won each game of the qualifying round by 21 points or more, with Giannis only needing to play about 20 minutes against Luka and the Slovenians.
Canada on the flip side is coming into this tournament after a Bronze Medal at last year’s FIBA World Cup and with exhibition wins against other Olympic opponents in France and Puerto Rico.
Today the tournament officially begins and everything counts that much more. With so much on the line for these athletes, be ready to watch them leave it all out there on the floor.

Greece and Giannis needed to qualify for this tournament, not only did they do that but they beat the breaks off each of their opponents. They won each game by 21 or more points, including a 28 point win over Luka and his Slovenian countrymen.
Giannis played in just 3 of the 4 games during the qualified, averaging 23 points per game in just under 23 minutes per game. He averaged 63% from the field and 8.3 free throws per game.
Of all the guys in the tournament, Giannis is one of the few that’s super familiar with the international game and what it takes to win. He doesn’t foul bait, but he understands that going through his opponents will still get him to the line.
If this Greece team has any hope in this tournament, it’ll have to start with Giannis. His biggest game in the qualifiers came against the Dominican Republic, he played 32 minutes and finished with 32 points on 100% from the field.
Canada lacks size inside and that’s exactly where Giannis will try to take advantage. Look for his size and athleticism to get over this line and hopefully climbing that ladder.

Both of these teams are two of the higher powered offenses in this tournament. Canada’s coming off a Bronze Medal in last year’s World Cup and not only did they win Bronze, but they beat the United States to do it.
It was a momentous occasion in Canadian Basketball, and they look to keep that momentum going now. In last year’s World Cup, Canada averaged 98.8 points per game; 2nd only to the United States.
Greece, without Giannis, averaged 78.4 points per game and they scored 93 or more points in 3 of their 4 qualifying games. With so much on the line, I love these guys to come out firing and come hot.
