See Picks & Statistics For The GameYesterday’s Padres vs Reds game was delayed, but they eventually got it started and San Diego won, 5-4, evening their road record at .500 for the season. If the Padres are going to catch the Dodgers and/or the Giants in the NL West, that is an area they are going to have to improve on over the course of the season. Their road record is why MLB betting odds have them well behind the Dodgers to win the NL West.
OF Tommy Pham was the offensive star last night. He is batting leadoff now, and that gives SS Fernando Tatis Jr. a chance to be even more of a run producer. I think one of the reasons the Padres have struggled on the road is that the lineup has been underperforming. If Pham and guys like 3B Manny Machado get back to career norms, this team can soar.
Cincinnati is at .500, a mark it seems they are not sure if they want to go above or below. Right now that is good enough for them to be behind the Brewers and Cubs in the NL Central, but the Cubs are sinking. The offense is leading this team and will need to continue to do so with two rookie hurlers in the rotation.
With the way they hit and play their home games in a hitter-friendly ballpark, you would think the Reds would be a really good team at home. That has not been the case this season, as they are just 20-20 at Great American Ballpark. Similar to the Padres on the road, that is something they have to improve if they are going to make a push for the playoffs.

It Is Hard Not To Like San Diego
Tatis Jr. is the most exciting player in the National League if not the game. Were it not for Jacob deGrom, Tatis would be the MLB betting favorite for NL MVP. But as great as he is, he needs help if the Padres are going to reach their lofty expectations. After a stellar 9-1 homestand they won on the road last night and have a nice stretch of schedule between now and the All-Star break. They swept the Reds at home last week, outscoring them 24-13.
Yesterday was a bullpen day, so the Padres will be looking to really lean on Joe Musgrove in the game tonight. If you look past his 4-6 record you will see that he has been as good as any San Diego starter this season. Even with his no-hitter in April, he still flies below the radar. He is in good form too, allowing only two earned runs over his last two starts. Last week, he tossed seven shutout innings against the Reds.
Reds Have the Bats But Need More
For a while Reds outfielders Nick Castellano and Jesse Winker were 1-2 in the Majors in batting average? They are still among the leaders, ranking second and seventh, and key to the success of the Reds, who are 5th in scoring but just 23rd in team ERA. Starter Sonny Gray is hurt, and Luis Castillo has struggled much of the season. The lineup has been the constant even though 1B Joey Votto has been poor and SS Eugenio Suarez is hitting under .200.
Injuries have pushed a couple of rookies into the rotation in Tony Santillan and Vlad Gutierrez. They have been about even in performance with Santillan taking the loss last night. Gutierrez did start at San Diego in the last series and was hit harder than he had been in his short career, giving up 5 ER over 5 innings.
Joe Musgrove Home vs Away
- Home: 3-3, 2.25 ERA, 48 IP, 60 Ks, 13 BBs
- Away: 1-3, 2.19 ERA, 37 IP, 43 Ks, 6 BBs
Vladimir Gutierrez Home vs Away
- Home: 1-1, 3.46 ERA, 13 IP, 11 Ks, 5 BBs
- Away: 2-1, 4.29 ERA, 21 IP, 16 Ks, 11 BBs
Musgrove is very familiar with the Reds having pitched in the NL Central with Pittsburgh. The only reason to be nervous about him in this spot is that in a couple of starts at Great American he has allowed some homers. That is the way the park plays, however. He can still be expected to outpitch Gutierrez though.
Padres vs. Reds Best Bet: Padres Run Line – If the Padres had never seen Gutierrez before I might have looked to see if the rookie could stymie “Slam Diego”. They were all over him though, and his home splits are nothing crazy. I am a little nervous that the Padres bullpen could be a little depleted, but Musgrove is an arm you can push. He just threw over 100 pitches in his last start against the Dodgers. The run line is the play with the Padres heavy MLB betting favorites for this matchup.
