It’s a relatively busy night around the NBA with eight games lined up for Thursday, Dec. 28. The action begins with two teams heading in opposite directions when the lowly Detroit Pistons (2-28) take on the Boston Celtics (23-6) for a 7:30 p.m. ET clash at TD Garden.
The Pistons made history on Tuesday, losing an NBA-record 27th straight game with a 118-112 loss to the Brooklyn Nets. The Celtics, meanwhile, improved to 8-1 SU in their last nine outings as Kristaps Porzingis’ 28-point, 11-rebound double-double led them to a 126-115 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.
Like any other NBA game, tonight’s showdown is filled with betting opportunities. With that in mind, let’s dive into my Pistons vs Celtics predictions and best bets.

Pistons vs Celtics Prediction & Pick (Dec. 28)
While upsets are a part of sports, there’s little reason to believe that Detroit can shock the world tonight.
The Celtics are currently the No. 1 team in the NBA, leading the pack with a 23-6 record. They’re one of the best teams on both sides of the ball, allowing the third-fewest points per game while scoring the sixth-most, resulting in a plus-10.2 average scoring margin (2nd). That’s without mentioning that Boston also averages the second-most rebounds and blocks.
The Pistons, meanwhile, are near the bottom of the league when it comes to the majority of categories. On top of owning the third-worst offense, Detroit allows opponents to average 120.8 PPG (26th) while shooting 48.8% from the floor (23rd) and 37.9% from the three-point line (24th).
Considering how the Pistons also force the third-fewest turnovers, things could get ugly early on if the Celtics get off to a hot start.
This game happening in enemy territory makes things even worse for the Pistons. After all, Detroit’s record-breaking skid involves 13 consecutive road losses in which Monty Williams’ team was outscored by an average of 16.4 points.
On the flip side, the Celtics have yet to lose at home this season, boasting a 14-0 SU (10-4 ATS) record at TD Garden. Even more impressive is that Boston won those home games by an average of 15.6 points, which comes in as the best margin league-wide.
Nevertheless, it’ll be interesting to see who’s in the Celtics’ lineup tonight. Jayen Brown (back) has been ruled out while Lamar Stevens (illness), Svi Mykhailiuk (heel), Jayson Tatum (ankle), and Oshae Brissett (illness) are all available.
Meanwhile, Isaiah Stewart (toe) has been ruled out for Thursday’s game while Killian Hayes and Ausar Thompson — who are both dealing with an illness — are probable to suit up.
Don’t overthink things: the Celtics will win tonight without breaking a sweat. Boston is poised to be in contention for the Larry O’Brien Trophy, once again, while the Pistons will be lucky if they even reach double-digit wins this season. It just won’t be close.
Still, a 17-point spread is substantial, which is why I’m going with the Over instead. On top of the Over being 5-1 in the Celtics’ last six games, it’s also 10-5 for the Pistons on the road this season. The Over has also been hit in five of the last seven Detroit-Boston matchups.
With the Pistons boasting one of the worst defenses, hitting the Over is a real possibility even if the C’s do most of the heavy lifting.

Best Pistons vs Celtics NBA Player Prop (Dec. 28)
Moving over to Bovada for the best Pistons vs. Celtics player prop, let’s take Derrick White to hit over 2.5 three-pointers.
White is having a great year from the three-point line, averaging a career-high 2.8 threes on 42.4% shooting. He’s now averaging 3.9 threes made on 46.7% shooting in his last nine games, finishing with the Over on this prop in three of the last four.
With the Pistons struggling to defend the perimeter, it should be busy as usual for White at home.
