Pistons vs Knicks Prediction & NBA Picks Today (2/26): One Skid Ends at MSG

It’s safe to say that the Knicks’ recent games haven’t gone as planned. Not only has New York lost five of its last six outings, but it was held to an average of just 105.7 points during that stretch while getting outscored by an average of 8.2 PPG.

Jalen Brunson has been averaging 30.8 points and 7.6 assists over his last five outings, but his efforts haven’t been enough to make up for the Knicks’ offensive struggles. After all, Tom Thibodeau’s team is missing several key players at the moment, including Julius Randle (shoulder), OG Anunoby (elbow), and Mitchell Robinson (ankle). Unfortunately, the trio is expected to be out for the foreseeable future.

The one thing that the Knicks do have going for them is that they have already beaten the Pistons this season. New York notched a 118-112 victory over Detroit back on Nov. 30 as Brunson recorded a game-high 42 points while shooting 7-for-12 (58.3%) from the three-point line.

Can the Knicks turn things around without the likes of Julius Randle (above) and OG Anunoby in the lineup?

A date with the Pistons is exactly what the Knicks need to get back on track, though. After all, New York hasn’t lost a game to Detroit since November 2019, winning each of the last 13 encounters in a row by an average of 15.0 points.

Furthermore, the Pistons haven’t won at Madison Square Garden since the 2018-19 NBA season, going 0-6 SU since then.

The Pistons have caught teams off guard at times this season, but it’s hard to have faith in an upset given their recent struggles. Detroit is in the middle of its own offensive struggles, averaging just 108.2 PPG while shooting 45.1% from the floor, 34.0% from deep, and 67.5% from the free-throw line. That just isn’t a recipe for success no matter how you slice it.

Cade Cunningham & the Pistons have seen their fair share of recent offensive struggles.

Even though it’s hard to trust either team at the moment, the Knicks are the better pick to win. The Pistons just aren’t consistently reliable and even though the host team is shorthanded, the Knicks have proven that they know how to handle them at Madison Square Garden.

But even if I’m not projecting them to win, I do like the Pistons at +11 on the spread. After all, Detroit is a solid 13-5 ATS in its last 18 games whereas New York is 1-7 ATS in its previous eight. Additionally, the Knicks failed to cover the spread in each of their last five home games, boasting a minus-8.0 average scoring margin along the way.

Considering how the Knicks only beat the Pistons by six points when they had a healthy roster back in November, I don’t see New York winning by 12 or more tonight.

With injuries piling up to those around him, Brunson has stepped up in recent weeks. The ex-Villanova Wildcat is averaging a whopping 32.0 points on .499/.359/.878 splits over his last 15 games, finishing with the Over on this prop nine times — including a 34-point effort against the Celtics. The Over is also 4-1 in his last five home games, averaging 35.2 PPG in those outings.

After dropping 42 points against the Pistons earlier this season, I see no reason to start doubting Brunson tonight.
