The Pacific Division in the NHL consists of 8 teams on the Pacific Coast of the United States and Canada. The division is situated within the Western Conference, and the champion of the Pacific earns a #1 seed in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Last season, the Calgary Flames were the champs of the Pacific, winning with relative ease and posting a 50-21-11 record. Their 111 points was only 6th best in the NHL regular season, but they still received the automatic #1 seed.
The Pacific had three teams make the playoffs last year, but only two of those teams were north of 100 points. The division was also home to three teams who failed to reach 80 points on the season.
2023 Pacific Division Title Odds
- Edmonton Oilers +240
- Calgary Flames +300
- Vegas Golden Knights +300
- Los Angeles Kings +400
- Vancouver Canucks +1000
- San Jose Sharks +7000
- Anaheim Ducks +7000
- Seattle Kraken +7000
Pacific Division Favorites
Edmonton Oilers +240
The Oilers made the Western Conference Final last season, in what was there best season since 2006 when they made the Final. Edmonton got bounced in the Final by the eventual Stanley Cup Champion Colorado Avalanche.
Edmonton’s regular season was also impressive. They finished 2nd in the division behind Calgary and posted a 49-27-6 record. Despite not having home ice advantage against Calgary in the Battle of Alberta, they were able to down them in just 5 games.
The Oilers have a ton of talent on their roster, but the most impressive statistics have come from the duo of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. They combined for 99 goals in 2022, and their point totals were both well north of 100.
This upcoming season looks promising for Edmonton. They will surely build off of their solid postseason success, and I would assume they will be in the Top 5 offensively within the league. Explosive numbers are coming from the stars north of the border.
Calgary Flames +300
The Flames had a Top 5 offense and Top 5 defense in 2022. Three separate players scored 30+ goals, and the goaltending was fantastic. Jacob Markstrom had a 37-15-9 record in 63 starts last year with a 2.22 goals against average.
The Flames were able to advance in the postseason with a Game 7 victory over the Dallas Stars. However, their luck would run out quite quickly when they faced Edmonton in Round 2. They lasted 5 games in a 4-1 series defeat.
The biggest news this offseason has been the loss of two offensive producers. Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk are both on to new teams, and Calgary will have to adjust with the pieces they have, as well as new offensive star, Jonathan Huberdeau.
2023 will be a weird season for Calgary fans. They were expected to be the favorite in the division, but with the loss of multiple pieces in the offense, their line has gotten larger. Expect that number to continue to rise as the offseason moves on and training camps begin.
Vegas Golden Knights +300
The Knights didn’t have a bad season last year, but they failed to make the playoffs for the first time in team history. They came up 3 points short of a wild card spot, and they had to watch the other three teams ahead of them advance to the playoffs.
Vegas has been a powerhouse since they joined the league in 2017. Seeing them miss the postseason doesn’t seem real, since it has happened ever year prior to 2022. However, they are poised and ready to rebound after a productive offseason.
Even though the team has lost forward Max Pacioretty, they have re-signed Reilly Smith and Brayden Pachal to new contracts in order to keep the team structure intact. They share the same odds as the Flames, but I believe they hold more value as it sits.
In 2023, look for the Knights to put up a better fight for the division title. Every team has off years, and if a 43-31-8 record is as bad as it gets, fans should feel pretty confident as hockey returns this fall.
