Hurricanes vs Lightning NHL Predictions & Picks (1/7)
As mentioned before, life has been rough for the Lightning recently.
After posting one of the NHL’s best records in December, Jon Cooper’s team has stumbled into the New Year one a four-game losing streak. The Lightning’s offense has completely dried up lately as they’ve been outscored 13-5 on aggregate during their current skid, which includes being held to exactly one goal in each of their last three outings.
The Hurricanes, meanwhile, have played to mixed results in the form of a 3-4 SU record in their last seven games. They do have some momentum on their side following Sunday’s 4-3 overtime win over the Anaheim Ducks that saw Seth Jarvis (2 G, 1 A) and Sebastian Aho (1 G, 2 A) lead the charge with three-point performances.
Although the Hurricanes are feeling good about themselves, playing in enemy territory has raised some issues. After opening the season with a 7-3 SU road record, Carolina has dropped eight of its 10 most recent away games, hinting that the visitors might be vulnerable enough for the hosts to take advantage.
The Hurricanes have struggled to find success outside of Lenovo Center lately. Will that change tonight?
Tonight’s game marks the second matchup of the 2024-25 campaign between the Eastern Conference contenders. The duo opened the season against each other at Lenovo Center on Oct. 11, ending in a 4-1 road win for the Lightning as Nikita Kucherov scored a hat trick.
With the victory, Tampa Bay improved to 4-1 SU in its last five meetings with Carolina.
Another good thing that the Lightning have going is their special teams units. It’s a small sample size, but the Bolts are impressively 4-of-17 (23.5%) on the power play while killing 14 consecutive penalties in their last six games. For comparison, the Hurricanes are only 2-of-21 (9.5%) on the man advantage in their last seven outings while experiencing plenty of penalty-killing success.
Tampa Bay also has a great shot at winning whenever Andrei Vasilevskiy starts in goal. The Russian goaltender has dominated the Hurricanes at Amalie Arena throughout his career, going 7-1-2 with a 2.16 goals-against average, .929 save percentage, and a shutout in 10 meetings at home.
As for the Hurricanes, Pyotr Kochetkov’s play has been inconsistent lately. The 25-year-old puck-stopper has dropped three of its last four starts while finishing with an SV% of .893 or worse in each defeat.
Can Lightning G Andrei Vasilevskiy outduel Hurricanes G Pyotr Kochetkov tonight?
Even though luck hasn’t been on their side for a while, I’m predicting a Lightning victory tonight.
The Hurricanes have been far from perfect lately, opening the door for the Lightning to turn their luck around. Tampa Bay’s recently decent play on special teams should give it a boost, as should the presence of the hometown crowd. Throw in the fact that the Hurricanes rarely win on the road, and it’s easy to love the home club’s outlook.
Let’s also hop on the Lightning’s moneyline odds. Again, they’ve dominated the Hurricanes for the last few seasons and I like the value that a home victory brings, especially after the Lightning already beat the former on the road this season.

Best Hurricanes vs Lightning NHL Player Prop Bet (1/7)
As he returns home following his team’s road trip, I’m taking a Nikita Kucherov anytime goal (+125 on Bovada) for the best Hurricanes vs. Lightning player prop bet.
Even though he’s scoring at a slightly lower rate than last season, Kucherov has still amassed 17 goals in 35 games. The five-time NHL All-Star has gone three straight games without a goal, however, it’s worth noting that a return to Amalie Arena could be exactly what the doctor ordered.
After all, Kucherov has tallied eight goals in 16 home games— including when he scored in each of his last two appearances in Tampa. That success could continue against the Hurricanes, who’ve given up five goals to him in the last two meetings alone.
With the Lightning desperately needing a victory, look for Kucherov to step up and deliver.
