Maple Leafs vs Hurricanes NHL Predictions & Picks (1/9)
Even though we’re already approaching the middle of January, this is only the first of three Maple Leafs vs. Hurricanes matchups this season. Recent history between these teams has leaned in one direction as Carolina is 4-1 SU across its last five encounters with Toronto.
The Maple Leafs will look to reverse that trend as they head into tonight’s affair as one of the NHL’s hottest teams. Everyone has been buying into head coach Craig Berube’s system lately as Toronto has won each of its last five games, outscoring those opponents 17-10 on aggregate along the way. Five players are operating at a point-per-game during the club’s heater, which includes Mitch Marner, Matthew Knies, and Auston Matthews, who’ve combined for 32 points.
Meanwhile, the Hurricanes’ recent stretch has been up and down, to say the least. They’ve played to a 3-6 SU record in their last nine games and are coming off Tuesday’s 3-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Even though times have been brought, the good news for the Hurricanes is that they’re 6-2 SU across their last eight home games.
At the same time, the Maple Leafs have been road warriors with a 6-1 SU record in their seven previous away outings.
The Maple Leafs have found a ton of success playing outside of Scotiabank Arena in recent weeks.
The Hurricanes hold the overall special teams advantage this season, however, the Maple Leafs’ situation is improving. Toronto is a respectable 4-of-18 (22.2%) on the power play and 15-of-17 (88.2%) on the penalty kill in its last seven games. On the flip side, Carolina has only scored on three of its last 27 (11.1%) man-advantage opportunities while owning an 81.8 PK% (18-of-22) in the last nine games.
Hurricanes goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov will likely be tasked with trying to stop the Maple Leafs. The veteran netminder’s play has been inconsistent lately as he’s an uninspiring 1-3-1 with a .897 save percentage in his last five outings. Although Kochetkov has won three of his four all-time meetings with Toronto, he only played to a .896 SV% and 3.48 goals-against average in those contests.
Meanwhile, Maple Leafs G Joseph Woll has won each of his last five starts, playing to a .934 SV% while allowing two or fewer goals in four of those appearances. The 26-year-old puck-stopper is also 4-0-0 with a 2.00 GAA and .938 SV% in his last four road games, proving that he’s more than comfortable with playing in enemy territory.
Maple Leafs G Joseph Woll has been among the NHL’s best netminders lately.
Even though the odds aren’t in their favor, I’m predicting a Maple Leafs win tonight.
Toronto has been on fire lately and I wouldn’t be shocked if it takes advantage of Carolina’s recent inconsistencies. The Hurricanes are still one of the Eastern Conference’s best teams, but the offense has been all over the place lately, making them vulnerable to being outgunned by the Maple Leafs. Woll’s recent resurgence only improves his team’s chances of pulling off an upset.
With that in mind, take the Maple Leafs on the moneyline.

Best Maple Leafs vs Hurricanes NHL Player Prop Bet (1/9)
I love plus-money player prop bets, which is why I’m going with Matthews Knies to record 1+ points (+117 on SportsBetting) as one of the best Maple Leafs vs. Hurricanes options tonight.
After earning a full-time role with the Maple Leafs last season, Knies has broken out this year. The Phoenix, AZ native has 26 points in his first 40 games and isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. After going on a five-game point drought, Knies has tallied seven points in his last three outings, making good on this prop in each appearance.
Knies should see plenty of opportunities to register at least one point tonight, especially considering how the Hurricanes have allowed three-plus goals in six of their last seven games, surrendering at least four goals three times.
